"Are you okay, Brianna?" Merry asked me, inquisitively. I nodded, and took a sip of my tea. Merry smiled at me, and I smiled back. I was staying with Merry for a few days while Frodo went with Gandalf to Rivendell. I looked up from my tea, and Merry was staring at me. I gave him an odd look, and he looked away. "Sorry Bri, it's just, your eyes are very beautiful." He grinned. I blushed, and tried to hide it by rubbing my face, as if I was tired.
"Time for bed, is it?" Merry asked. I looked out the window, and noticed it was dark. "Yeah.. Could you show me to my room, please?" I asked. Merry got out of his chair, and helped me out of mine. He walked me down the hall, and into an empty room. It was cozy, with one window and a bed in the middle. "This is beautiful, Merry." I said in awe. I turned around to face him, and saw he was smiling. I walked over to the bed, and crawled under the covers. I looked back at Merry, "good night, Merry. Thank you for letting me stay here." "You're welcome, Bri. It's nice having company here. If you need anything, I'm right down the hall. Goodnight." Merry shut off the light, and shut the door quietly, making sure to make no noise.
I laid my head down on the pillow, and sighed. I can't get comfortable. I turned to the other side, and tried to get comfy. That didn't work. I sat up, and ran my hands through my hair. I looked around the room, and saw a bookcase in the corner. Maybe I can read myself to sleep.. I thought. Not having Frodo here to help me go to sleep feels odd, unnatural even. I hopped out of bed, and walked over to the bookcase. I picked out a book that seemed interesting, "The Story of Esmeralda Took.. The Wife of a King... Wow.." I whispered, turning it to look at it's cover. I decided to read it, and walked back over to the bed with it.
~An hour later~
I tossed and turned, still not being able to sleep. I tried to read the book, but it didn't make me tired. I heard a small knock on the door, and it opened slowly and quietly. "Still awake..?" Merry asked. I nodded, trying to hide my frustration. He walked over to the bed, and sat on the side. "M-Merry.. Can you sing me a lullaby..?" I asked shyly. "Of course! I might not be the best singer, but Pippin says I'm good." He chuckled. "Come here." He smiled, holding his arms open. I crawled out from the sheets, and over to Merry. He wrapped his arms around me, and I rested my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. His beautiful heartbeat..
Merry started to rock me back and forth, and started singing: "Home is behind, the world ahead.. And there are many paths to tread.. Through shadow, to the edge of night, until the stars are all alight.." Merry pushed my hair behind my ear, and rubbed my cheek. "Mist and shadow.. Clouds and shade.. All shall fade.. All shall... Fade.." Merry looked down at me, and saw that I was asleep. He smiled, and laid me under the covers. He pushed my hair back, and kissed my forehead. "I love you, Brianna." He whispered, and left the room.
