*****“Happy Valentine’s Day Delilah! I brought you something,” I said holding a bouquet of roses behind my back. She glared at me and put her hands on her hips.
“You better have gotten me something expensive!” She exclaimed. I looked at her weirdly. That was unlike her, she’s normally so sweet.
“Uh…” I started.
“Oh ha,” she uttered blushing. “I was just kidding.” I sighed in relief. That was more like it.
“Here,” I replied and pulled the roses from behind me. Delilah took them from me with a surprised expression.
“These are… so not expensive! How dare you get me something so insulting!” she yelled angrily. I took a step back. I knew when she got mad that the receiving end of that was in major danger.
“I’m sorry! I’ll buy you anything you want! Just stop being angry with me! I can’t take it!” I pleaded with her. I would do anything for her. Anything! I loved Delilah. The fire in her blue eyes faded as she registered my words.
“No, no, I’m sorry, Jeremy. I shouldn’t be angry with you; your gift was sweet and generous. I guess I’ve just had a crappy day,” Delilah stated as her eyes filled with tears. I hugged her and the tears started falling faster. Her whole body shook with her pain.
“Shhh, it’s okay I’m here for you. Do you want to tell me what happened?” I asked. Delilah’s crying stopped abruptly and she pushed me away.
“Uhhh,” she hesitated while wiping her eyes. “My grandma died.” Something told me she was lying, but I knew she wasn’t. She was my girlfriend she wouldn’t lie to me.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. My offer is still on the table; what do you want me to buy you?” I questioned wanting to get her in a better mood. Delilah smiled happily.
“You remember that necklace with that matching set of earrings I saw in the store, right?” I nodded. “Can you get me those please?” She squealed. I internally groaned. Altogether that would be eight hundred dollars.
“Are… are you sure?” I hoped she would change her mind. Her smile faltered and her eyes held barely noticeable anger in them.
“Yes, I’m sure,” Delilah said through clenched teeth.
Fast-forward a year
I knocked on Delilah’s door and smiled when her mom answered.
“She’s in her room,” Mrs. Sharp said while smiling.
“Thanks!” I told her as I walked up to Delilah’s room. I was so excited. It was our two year anniversary and I was surprising Delilah with concert tickets to her favorite band. As I walked closer to her room I started hearing weird sounds. I decided to ignore it, but then I heard a moan. I ran the rest of the way and opened the door. Much to my surprise Delilah and a random guy were making out on her bed.
“What’s going on here?” I yelled furiously. The guy stopped sucking on her neck for a second to turn to me.
“Who’s he?” he asked Delilah. The shock on her face made me want to cry. She didn’t look upset at all! Just shocked.
“T-that’s Jer-Jeremy,” she stuttered. She didn’t even bother to tell him that I was her boyfriend!
“What’s he doing here on our first year anniversary?” the guy asked gruffly. I scoffed.
“I don’t know,” Delilah said honestly. That’s when my anger hit its boiling point. Delilah knew what I was going to do because she started gesturing widly for me to stop.
“Oh, it’s your first year anniversary? Well congratulations! Now, tell me how you feel about the fact that it’s Delilah and I’s two year anniversary?” I asked the guy menacingly. Delilah hung her head down in defeat.
“Say what now?!” the guy yelled. He turned to Delilah and ripped the bracelet she was wearing off.
“Hey give that back, it’s mine!” Delilah screamed at him.
“Uh, I don’t think so! That was your anniversary present, but now it isn’t your anniversary!” the guy stated blatantly while standing up, the hugeness of him filling the room.
“Oh by the way, I bought you concert tickets, but they’re not for you anymore!” I added.
“Might as well get some use out of those tickets. I’ll go with you if you want,” the very tall, muscular guy said. I nodded my head and walked out the door.
“Go ahead, walk out that door! Just know that I can find other nitwits to buy me expensive things!” Delilah yelled at our retreating backs. How could I have been so blind as to love her? The better question is… how do I get over her?
“Soooo, my name is Oliver,” the guy said.
“Nice name, mine is Jeremy,” I replied. He nodded.
“Why are you leaving so soon? And… When did that other boy get up there, who is he?” Mrs. Sharp asked frazzled. I looked at her sympathetically.
“I think it’s time you talked to your daughter about cheating and using people,” I told her quietly. She gaped at me. I couldn’t take the pain in her eyes so I left. *****
I woke up with tears streaming down my face.
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” I muttered to myself sadly.
