"What did you call me?" I ask the man.

"It means death bringer." He says. His voice is low, and deep. As odd as it is for someone to judge another by their voice; he sounds wise.

"Why did you call me that?" I ask him, my body stiff, my tone frigid.

"You're curious. Be careful, not everyone is as patient as I when someone come's to their home and immediately starts asking questions." He says. Making me feel foolish. "My name is Panceton Staroe. I am head of the vampire counsel. I do not know how much Eric has told you about us, so let me inform you. Every new vampire, infant or adult stands before us, or they're killed. Our job is to tell you about your affinity, and how to properly use it. Some fledglings require training. I'll tell you now my dear, you have an independent affinity. Your affinity is death." A soft gasp falls from the woman beside Pranceton. "Death cannot be trained, or mastered. An affinity for death hasn't been present in over two billion years." He says, studying me carefully.

"How did you know that was my affinity?" I ask.

"That is mine my dear, telling what other people have an affinity for is my affinity." He says, a small smile gracing his aged face. "And if you don't believe me, you do have a black rose as your mark, don't you?"

I glance down at my hand. "Yes, I do" he smiles.

"That's the symbol for death my dear. Now back to what I was saying before, things must change for you. You must attend an academy specific to vampires. Each country has an academy. The one you will be attending is on the outskirts of Calgary Alberta. It's not far into the city from the academy, but you have specific times you're allowed to leave. It's not permitted in the daytime or during class time. Students usually find the most time to go into town in the evenings on weekends. You will be informed of all this later. Our job right now is to determine whether you will do good or bad to this world. That's what Stefen" he gestures to the man beside him with jet black hair "Is here for. He can foresee the future. He will tell us if your fate will bring greatness or doom to our kind. If you're destined to bring us failure, you will be killed here and now. Understand?" My throat is too tight to speak, so I give a firm nod.

The man, Stefen as Pranceton called him, steps down, away from his podium. In front of me I can see that he is easily a solid 6'7 or 6'8. He dwarfs my short stature. I look up, and find his eyes to be a piercing dark blue colour. He stands in front of me, and places the pointer and middle fingers of each hand on both of my temples. He holds my gaze with his, and my vision slowly fades from his face, to a sunny, green, meadow. I see my reflection in a lake that randomly appears on the ground in front of me. My hair is in a waterfall braid, and I'm wearing a flowing white dress. The sunlight makes me look angelic. I back away from the lake, and run my hands through the tall grass. The bee's dance on my hands but they don't sting me. When my hands run over thorn bushes, I feel no pain. No pain comes, even as small droplets of scarlet dribble down my fingers. I see a rose that stands higher than all the grass around me. That seems to be where I'm headed so I go with it. I arrive at the rose, and I reach out to touch it. My finger glides across one of the petals, and it turns black. The petals fall of and the stem withers.

"What's happening?" I whisper to myself, as the petals fall.

Suddenly I'm looking at Stefen again. He stands there, eyes wide, mouth wide.

"She's the one" His low voice whispers. It's hoarse from not being used.

Pranceton hurry's down from his podium, to stand beside Stefen.

"Stefen.. Did you break your silence? She must be the one!" He announces loudly.

"What do you mean..?" I ask, looking up at the men.

"The Guardian vechi. The ancient guardian in your language. Or the Protector de secrete, Protector of Secrets. You are the one to guard secrets so confidential, you won't even know them. You must not tell anyone what you are, or you may be killed. You will not be treated differently. This role will start to effect you in your last year at the academy. That won't be for a few years, so we need not talk about that right now. The only person who will know, will be your father, Eric."

I nod, my brain swirling with information.

"Don't think about this. It's time for you to go. I will speak to Eric while you and Alex go to sit in the vehicle." I nod at Pranceton's words. The large doors at the end of the room are pulled open. Eric and Alex stand there waiting, their hands clasped behind their backs. I smile, and exit the room.

"Alex, go with Kate" Eric says, smiling. Alex nods, and follows me to the car. I try not to look at the building, so I'm not drawn to it again.

"What happened?"  Alex asks me quietly.

"Pranceton said I have a death affinity, and Stefen showed I have a clear, and safe future." I lie. I used to be a terrible Liar, why is this so easy for me now? Alex nods and looks out the tinted window.

Eric enters the car twenty minutes after we did, and directs the driver back to the airport. We board the same plane from before and head back to America.

Once they're home

We approach my front door, and I pull it open. Aron, my mom, and Tanya sit in the living room.

"Hey! How'd the trip go?" My mom asks, smiling.

"Great. I do have to attend an academy near Calgary though." I tell her. Alex looks at me quickly.

"You're coming to my school?" He asks, trying to sound nonchalant, but there's an underlying worry in his question.

"Yes, aren't you happy?" I ask him.

"Ecstatic" He mutters. I brush it off and rush to sit beside mom and Tanya. I tell them everything. From the small island, to the counsel room.
