"Yeah, you've got a friend in me."
Alex woke up the next morning to a quiet apartment, which was strange because Jim was normally blasting music if he woke up first. She was surprised to see breakfast already made and a note on the kitchen counter.
Back soon. Be ready to leave when I get home. -J
Puzzled, she took a bite out of her toast and continued to get herself ready to go. She packed the few things she cherished most, and her two favorite outfits before slinging her bag on the counter so she could finish her breakfast.
A few moments later, Jim waltzed in the door, slamming the keys to his bike on the counter. He leaned over the counter to Alex.
"You almost ready?"
She gave him a funny look. "You that excited to see me go?"
He laughed and nonchalantly answered, "I'm excited to come with you."
Alex raised an eyebrow. "You're what?"
"I'm joining Starfleet, Alex."
His sister's mouth dropped to the floor and he made his way around the counter. Alex leapt into his arms with a squeal and Jim spun her around.
"I knew you would, Jim. I knew you would."
He set her down and the two smiled at each other in sheer excitement.
"Are you ready?" He asked. "Cause I'm ready."
"Let's do this."
--
The two arrived on Jim's bike outside the shipyard where they both saw Pike standing outside, hands neatly folded behind his back, as if he was waiting for someone.
"Nice ride, man." A worker turned around and complimented it.
"It's yours." Jim and Alex hopped off the bike. Jim tossed the man the keys and the two step siblings headed over to the shuttle, where Pike was eyeing them closely.
"Four years?" Jim stopped next to Pike. "I'll do it in three." Alex snorted as he went to find seats for the two of them.
"I'll keep him in check." She smiled up at the officer.
"I trust that you will." Pike winked back at her and Alex made her way on board the shuttle. She went to go sit next to him in the third row, and she was stopped by someone sitting on the edge of the second row.
"M'Benga!" She cheered. "Are you ready?"
"I was born ready Alex, I'll see you in San Francisco."
"See you there." She squeezed the man's shoulder and took a seat next to Jim, who was giving her a curious look.
"Who's that guy?" He asked, a pang of curiosity in his voice.
"I met him at the bar last night." Alex rolled her eyes.
"You need a doctor!" A woman's voice caught both Jim and Alex's attention.
"I told you people, I don't need a doctor, I am a doctor, damnit!" A man's southern drawl rang out this time.
She yelled at him again. "You need to return to your seat!"
"I had a seat in the bathroom, with no windows. I suffer from aviaphobia, which means fear of dying in something that flies." He argued back. Alex caught a glimpse of him, and could tell he was noticeably shaken up.
"Sir, for your own safety, sit down, or else I'll make you sit down!" The man was taken aback by the woman's order, and he gave her an angry huff before making his way over to the seat besides Alex.
He slumped down and turned to her. "I may throw up on you."
Alex's eyes widened and she nodded, turning to face forward. Jim looked over her and turned to the man. "I think these things are pretty safe."
"Don't pander me, kid. One tiny crack in the hull and our blood boils in thirteen seconds."
Alex gave Jim a weird look, before turning back to the ranting doctor.
"A solar flare might crop up, cook us in our seats. And wait till you're sitting with a pretty case of Andorian Shingles. See if you're so relaxed when you're eyeballs are bleeding. Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence." The doctor ranted on.
Alex turned to him, slightly amused. "It's 20 times harder to catch Andorian Shingles rather than Shingles here on earth."
"I hate to break it to you, but Starfleet operates in space." Jim piped in.
"Yeah well, I got nowhere else to go. The ex-wife took the whole damn planet in the divorce. All I've got left is my bones." The man pulled out a flask from his jacket pocket and took a long swig. He offered it to both Alex and Jim, and they eagerly took sips from it.
"Jim Kirk." Jim said, handing the flask back to him
"McCoy. Leonard McCoy." Leonard introduced himself.
"I'm Alexandra Watterson." Alex added. "Jim is my step brother."
Leonard raised an eyebrow and asked. "So are you a doctor, Alexandra? Cause not many people would know it's that hard to get Andorian Shingles."
"Sure am! And a pretty damn good one too. Oh and please, please call me Alex."
Leonard chuckled. "I guess I'll be seeing more of you then, Alex."
"Bet your ass you will."
