Chapter 4
For once, Mindy was right about Ryan.
Ryan was wearing a simple blue flannel shirt over a black V-neck shirt underneath. The front of his hair was swept upwards, revealing a chiselled face with a round jaw. He was wearing black-framed spectacles, but Tammie could see the deep caramel brown of his eyes.
He was as hot as a guitarist ever was, and he wasn't far from Tammie's ideal type of guy.
But something was off. It was as if she had seen Ryan before.
And what was more confusing was that Ryan was looking at her, wide-eyed, like he was thinking of the same thing.
Nah, she thought. She doesn't remember meeting a low-profile guitarist before. She tried to remain as indifferent as possible.
Tammie cleared her throat. 'Well?' she waved her hand back and forth. 'Aren't you going to say something?' Ryan looked at her outstretched hand, then back at her.
'You're the girl my sister chose?' Ryan said, almost arrogantly. Tammie laughed saracastically, putting her hand down. 'Who would Esther have chosen? A goldfish?' Right. Ryan looked like a goldfish, Tammie thought.
The moment Tammie sat down, Ryan spoke. 'Let's not eat here.' Eh? Her stomach was rumbling, and she hadn't eaten breakfast yet. Louis Tay made his own breakfast without her, and her father was a big eater. He left no traces of food for her.
Tammie tried to contain her hunger, but the aroma emanating from Ryan's cup of milk tea was making her have a desperate craving. 'Then where are we going?' She asked.
Ryan shrugged. 'Wherever you want.' Of all the things she hated most, Tammie didn't like people making her decide. She was expecting Ryan to take the lead.
But now, she could see that Ryan was nervous, his hands were trembling and he was looking at everywhere but her.
Oh I get it, she realised. Ryan was not being cooperative with the date because he had lots of experience with girls, it was because he has never asked a girl out before.
So both of them were first-timers. Great.
But she had promised Mindy that her first date with Ryan will go well, because if she didn't Mindy wouldn't help her conceal her secret from her father and Kevin.
As a matter of fact, Mindy was spying on her right now. Tammie wasn't sure if it really was her, or it was Jenna.
And Tammie was optimistic about this date. She really needed to go out today, using Mindy as an excuse so that her father will let her out.
Tammie put her negative vibes aside. She looked at Ryan, who was now staring at her intently, like he was trying to understand an equation between them that they both can't solve, a similar shade of colour they both share but can't differentiate.
He looks so cute, a thought suddenly formed in her head and she looked away.
Then she was remembered of the brochure she came across on the way to Anders Mall. The Annual North Carnival was back, and today was the last day.
It had been a long time since she went to the North Carnival. She was a child back then, and so many happy memories were made in that carnival, and Tammie wanted to relive those memories.
