Chapter 16
Torrential rain
'That's just great,' June put three gummybears in her mouth and chewed slowly.
'Can you stop making noises when you eat?' Solum complained beside her. She heard him bite into a biscuit.
'Sorry,' she answered,'I eat when I'm nervous.'
It has been ages since she and Solum were trapped inside their room. The rain pounded against the window, and it was barely visible outside. Their only light was a red flashlight Solum had brought from his apartment. June assumed that an hour had gone by, but the storm was still as strong as ever.
It was a good thing Kai and Marc had brought a large bag of snacks for them before this happened. Packets of chips, biscuits, chocolates, cheese sticks and drinks lay across the glass table.
June was holding her phone, waiting for a signal when it beeped. It was a message from the Anders Weather Center.
'Thunderstorm expected to last the whole night.' She read aloud.
'Seriously?' Solum scowled.
June was sure that there were still people downstairs, as stranded as they were. But it seemed like she and Leon were the only people in the building.
Solum sighed. 'So what do we do now eh? What if I need to pee?'
'Then you hold that damn pee of yours, silly,' June poked his rib. Solum was wearing a blue polo shirt and jeans, so her finger touched the cotton fabric.
'Ow,' his hand went to his rib. 'Are you some martial arts person or something?'
'I'm a black belter in judo.'
'Woah,' he held his arms up. 'Careful, June.'
She laughed and put her arms up in defence. Now that the air-conditioning was not working, she was feeling a bit sweaty wearing her brown long-sleeved knitted sweater and thick jeans.
But there was still the strong cold wind coming from the window, so she felt warm and cosy.
'It's the second last day of the arts exhibition,' Solum chucked a couple of gummyworms in his mouth. 'You haven't told much about yourself.'
