Chapter 18: Ava

I was sitting on the couch watching some TV when Josh burst out the back door with Xavier following him. Without hesitation I follow with Kristie at my side.

          “What happened?” I asked Kristie.

          Before she could answer Xavier turned around and blocked us from going any further, “You two need to go back. We don’t know how dangerous it is.”

          “What?” I asked.

          “I’ll tell you later just go in the house Ava,” Xavier commended. This was the first time he got serious with me and with that I knew whatever this threat was it was real.

          I reluctantly turned and walked back in with Kristie on my heels. Once we entered Kristie locked the door and closed the blinds, “We have to get in the basement.”

          “Why?”

          “Xavier said if there was ever a threat so close we needed to go in the basement and wait until they come back.”

          As she guides me down into the basement I blurt out, “What if they don’t come back?”

          “We wait a few hours and if they don’t return theirs a crawl space there,” she said pointing to a mirror on the wall. She went over to it and lifted it up revealing another room with blankets, supplies, and everything you can image. “If they don’t come back we go up the steps and we leave before anything bad can happen to us.”

          The steps were on the far side wall leading to double doors. We pile into this room and Kristie puts the mirror back to hide us if anyone decides to intrude when the boys were out.

          “Can’t they still smell our scent?” I asked as I sat on the tile floor and wrap a blanket around myself.

          Kristie sat across from me leaning up against the wall, “The fathers put some special scent up in the basement so it washes out ours.”

          “You guys are really prepared for this,” I spoke softly.

          She was playing with a loose string off her shirt, “Yeah. Once your pack was attacked the fathers decided to put this in. Your packs attack was spread everywhere. Once you contacted us Xavier’s father didn’t want to help you because he was worried that you’ll bring trouble but Xavier convinced him otherwise.”

          “But we did bring trouble.”

          “Don’t blame yourself. One the first day you arrived and found out Xavier was your mate he wouldn’t have let you leave. Plus I like your company, there’s not really a lot of girls in this pack.”

          I nodded, “I’ve noticed.”

          She laughed and extended her hand out and grabbed something off the table, “Here.”

          She threw me something and I caught it. I looked down at saw a pack of Twinkies. I laugh, “Thanks, I haven’t had one of these since right before the attack.”

          “Geez, that’s not right. I love Twinkies, Xavier would always try to steal them from me when we were kids and even now sometimes but I always win in the end.”

          I laugh, “How was Xavier when he was a kid? Or my age?”

          “An annoying little prick,” she said smiling at me. “When he was a kid he was the class clown and never took anything seriously. And when he entered high school he became…a player. But once his father threatened him that if he didn’t clean up his act he wouldn’t become alpha so Xavier retired from being a player quickly. And ever since he was a mature guy.”

          Jealousy got the nest of me, “How many girls would you say he used?”

          She shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know Ava but don’t hold that against him. He became a heartless jackass when his mom past. He left empty and to recover he…whatever forget I ever told you.” 

          I was angry but than I couldn’t help but forgive him. He was hurting and was probably worried to get hurt more if he committed to one girl. But since I am his mate he was probably concerned about me rejecting him at first. Maybe that was why he couldn’t keep his lips to himself.

          I hadn’t noticed I fell asleep until a strong pair of arms wrapped around me and picked me up. Without a doubt I knew it was Xavier. I nuzzled my face into his chest as he carried me up into our room. When he placed me on the bed I heard Josh at the door.

          “Xavier,” he whispered probably not wanting to wake me up.

          I heard Xavier’s footsteps as the went to him, “Everything will be fine.”

          “They took her Xavier! They have my mate!” I raised his voice to a yell.

          I flew up out of bed and looked to them looking back at me. Serena was taken! The Dark Shadows must have her!
