"Hi, can I get a latte please, 2 sugars." I said to the guy serving at the coffe cart. It's my first day at this new hospital I'm working at. I'm the new Trama fellow at Grey-Sloan Hospital.
I haven't had the best experience at my last hospital, so let's just hope this is my new start with new people.
"$3.00" They guy said. I pulled out a 5 dollar bill and handed it to him.
"Keep the change." I said smiling as I took my coffee and headed inside the doors of Grey-Sloan.
I was in the lobby and headed to the main desk.
"Hey, I'm Dr. Melissa Gates, I'm the new Trauma fellow. Can you let me know where I can get my badge?" I asked a nurse.
"Ah yes, Dr. Gates. Chief Bailey informed us that you were coming in today and left your badge here with us." She said handing it to me.
"Thank you so much." I said taking it from her and walking to the elevator. I pressed the up botton and looked around as I waited.
Pretty nice looking hospital. The elevator dinged and I walked inside.
"Hold the elevator!" A man yelled as he put his hand in between the elevator door and the wall. I quickly pressed the open door button and he walked in.
"Thanks." He said.
"You new around here?" He said.
"Is it that noticeable?" I said with a nervous smile.
"Well, I haven't seen your face around here before so." He said with a hint of play fullness in his voice.
I bit my lip and smiled.
"Dr. Melissa Gates, I'm the new trauma fellow." I said extending my hand out.
"Dr. Jackson Avery, Plastics." He said taking my hand and shaking it.
"Plastics, really?" I said surprised.
He raised an eyebrow.
"Yea, why."
"You just don't seem like the Plastics type I guess." I said tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Well what "type" do I look?" He said holding air quotes as he said 'type'.
"I don't know, maybe a hard ass cardio guy or something." I said looking up at him. He had the most prettiest blue/green eyes I had ever seen.
"Cardio really?" He said chuckling.
The elevator finally opened and we walked out.
"I'm just messing with you. But follow me and you can get changed in the Attendings lounge." He said. I nodded and we finally got there. We walked inside and I finally saw a familiar face.
"Arizona?" I said excitedly.
She turned around.
"Meliss?! Oh my God you're the new Trauma Fellow?" She said pulling me into a hug. We go way back, she was 3 years older than me and she helped me out with some classes in Medical school before she graduated and I was left alone.
"Yea, I am. How have you been." I asked.
"Great, I'm the head of Ped's here." She said.
"That's amazing. All the hard work payed off." I said putting my bag into my cubby.
"Likewise." She said.
"I gotta go, I have rounds, but I'll see you around." She said. I nodded. I then found some scrubs and changed in the bathroom. I then put my coat on and grabbed my pair of stethoscopes and slung them around my neck. I quickly finished my coffee and saw Jackson waiting for me.
"You ready, I can drop you off at Bailey's office before I go do my rounds." He said.
"That would be great." I said as we both walked out.
"That would be here." He said pointing to a door with Dr. Bailey's name on it.
"Thanks for everything." I said.
"No worries, I'll see you around." He said winking at me before leaving. I knocked on the door and entered the room.
"Dr. Gates, Welcome." Dr. Bailey said getting up from her chair.
"So did you get lost yet." She said playfully.
I chuckled and shook my head no.
"I've had a tour guide, Dr. Avery." I said.
She nodded.
"Well, just grab a tablet at a nurse station, sign in and then you're ready to go. If you go to the pit you'll run into the head of Trauma, Dr. Hunt and our other Trauma surgeon Dr. Kepner." I nodded.
"Well, it's great to have you here. Now go on, there are lives to save!" She said hurrying out of the room. I smiled and got up and left. I did as told and went down to the ER or the pit and found Dr. Hunt.
"Dr. Gates, that you?" He said waving at me.
"Yes, nice to meet you." I said. He shook my hand.
"Today you have Dr. Jo Wilson on your service." He said pointing to a resident. I nodded.
"Welcome aboard!" He said before walking away.
"So Wilson, got anything good?" I asked her.
"Slow day, but there was an accident so incoming 5 minutes." She said. I nodded.
"Well why are we still standing here let's go." I said running over to put on the disposable yellow gown on. I quickly tied it around my neck as I put my gloves on.
Wilson and I walked to the back where the ambulances drove in.
"You ready?" I asked her.
"Always." She answered.
"I like you already." I said as the ambulance pulled up.
The doors busted open and we ran to them.
"Unresponsive 25 year old male. Head Trauma, possible abdominal bleeding, and second degree burns on his leg." The EMT spat out quickly.
"Did his car blow up or something?" I asked due to him having burns.
"Yes, the driver that caused the accident is behind us." He said.
Just then Dr. Hunt and his resident came running as We rolled in the patient into Trauma Room 2.
"Anyone know the patient's name?" I asked.
One EMT held his walet up and read his ID.
"Mark Davis." She yelled out.
We pushed him off the ambulance gourney and onto the bed.
I nodded and connected him to an IV.
I lifted his shirt up and saw abdominal bruising.
"Wilson ask one of your interns to gram a portable sonogram, we got a bleed." I yelled. I checked his pupils and they were dilated.
"Crap, page Nuero he has a brain bleed too." I yellled out. I finally got the sonogram and pressed it on his stomach. There was bleeding around the spleen, so we're going to have to remove that. I then moved to on to his leg. His thigh was completely burnt.
"Page Plastics too, we have a second degree burn here.
"I'm Dr. Shepherd, Nuero." A lady said walking in.
"Dr. Gates, I'm the new trauma fellow." I said as I started putting gauze over the burns as we waited for plastics.
"He's got a subdural hematoma, let's book an OR. Let's take him up for a head CT." She said.
"I'm here." Jackson ran in.
"Second degree burn on his leg." I said pointing to his thigh.
"Let's move people." I said as Wilson and I lifted the bed bars and pushed him to the CT room.
This is going to be an interesting first day.
