"Mrs. Nelson's lab results are back." Edwards said handing me her tablet.
"She's pregnant, and not compatible." I said running my hands through my hair frustratedly.
"I'll go let her know, has any other family member showed up?" I asked.
"Yes actually, I believe a sister and a cousin." Edwards explained.
I nodded.
"Test them and make sure they're spreading the word please." I finished before walking away. I walked back to Eric's room where his wife was waiting. I knocked on the ICU sliding door. She looked up at me.
"I have your test results back." I said walking inside.
"You are not compatible. But, you're pregnant. About 4 weeks along. " I said giving her a small smile.
She started crying as she was in disbelief.
"Eric and I always wanted a family with three kids. And now it's happening and he...he needs to be here for this. It's not just my wish, it's also his." She said holding onto his hand tight.
I set my hand on her shoulder.
"Trust me, I'm doing everything I can to find him a liver." I said to her. She looked back up at me and nodded.
"Oh and a sister and a cousin of his are here." I said before I could forget to tell her.
She nodded eagerly.
"Great, please let me know how it turns out." She says. I nodded.
I walked out of the room and towards the elevator when Edwards ran up to me.
"I found a liver." She said as she breathed heavily.
My eyes widened.
"Where?!" I asked.
"I'll bring you to her." She said as the elevator opened.
We went to the first floor where the donor was waiting. We rushed out of the elevator and approached a woman.
"Hi I'm Dr. Gates." I said extending my hand out.
"I'm Carly Hendricks, nice to meet you." She said with a small smile.
"So you want to donate a piece of your liver to Eric Nelson?" I asked her. She nodded.
"Are you family?" She shook her head no nervously.
"I've been secretly in a relationship with Eric for the past 6 months. I found out what happened to him by a friend." She said.
I was in shock. This is absolutely terrible. I cannot let my personal feelings in the way, I need to think like a surgeon.
"Please, I know you probably think the worst of me right now, but I just want to help him." She said desperately. Stephanie and I exchanged looks.
"Let's say I agree, what am I supposed to tell his wife?"
"I can be an anonymous donor."
"She specifically asked to be informed about any possible donors. And honestly the least you can do is honor her wish." I said sternly.
"Fine, tell her the truth. Or at least part of it. I'm an old college friend that found out about him through a mutual friend."
I ran my hands through my hair.
"Dr. Edwards is going to run a final lab on you to confirm compatibility. After the results I'll decide." She nodded.
They left and took a breath. This seriously just turned into the most weirdest thing. Honestly all I need is to keep this man alive. What ever happens in his personal life shouldn't be my business right? I need to push my ego aside and accept. What really matters is for him not to die. I needed a break from all of this and went to the cafeteria for some lunch. I grabbed a tray along with a chicken caesar salad. I grabbed a bottle of water and some grapes. I spotted Meredith and Amelia sitting with Alex and decided to join.
"Hey guys." I said sitting down.
"You look stressed." Alex said taking a bite from his apple.
"Oh trust me, I am." I said.
"Find a liver yet?" Mer asked.
"Kind of. Turns out this guy's been having an affair and she showed up saying she's compatible. Same blood type and everything. But I have Edwards running labs to confirm. The wife wants to know of any possible donor and the girl wants to stay anonymous. I just feel like shit right now." I said grabbing my fork.
"That's Grey-Sloan Memorial for you baby." Amelia said chuckling.
I rolled my eyes.
"What would you choose Amelia." I asked eating my salad.
"It doesn't matter what I would do because you already know what you're going to do. The best thing for the patient no matter what. " She said. The worst part is she's right.
"You know what the worst part is?" I asked taking a sip from my water. They all raised their eyebrows.
"His wife is pregnant. About a month along."
"He's banging both of them at the same time?" Mer said with a disgusted face.
I nodded.
"See now I wouldn't even do that, and I'm Alex." He said.
"You wouldn't do it no matter what, you're a softie." Mer said to him with a chuckle.
Me and Amelia laughed as Alex shook his head.
"Fine you're right. But still, it ain't right." He said. I agreed.
We finished our lunch as they shared some of their cases. Alex got paged and Meredith had to go scrub in for a surgery. Amelia and I were left.
"So how are you and Jacksy poo?" She said with a smile.
I still to this day chuckle at her nickname for him.
"We're good. Oh my god, with all the fuss with my liver patient, I totally forgot to tell you guys that my mom and sister came into town from ny. The suprised me, I had absolutely no idea they were coming. I was in bed with Jackson when the doorbell woke us up and there they were."
"That's so nice! You're taking off to show them around right?"
I nodded.
"Ofcourse. And I think I myself am going to explore and get to know Seattle some more." I said finishing my last grape.
She nodded and smiled.
My phone dinged. I checked and it was Edwards.
"Got to get going, labs are in." I said as we got up and I threw my garbage out and went to a consult room where Carly and Stephanie were waiting for me.
Dr. Edwards handed me the tablet.
I opened up the lab results.
Compatible.
I looked back up at Carly.
"Get her consent forms and then prepped for surgery. I have to go speak with Mrs. Nelson." I spoke. Carly's mouth broke out into a smile.
"Thank You Dr. Gates!" She said.
"Just so you know, I'm not doing it for you. I'm doing it to protect Eric's family." I said before walking away. We were down to about two hours so this is just perfect timing. I quickly ran up the stairs to Eric's room.
His wife looked up at me.
"We have a liver." I said with a small smile. Her eyes widened as she smiled wide.
"Oh My God! This is a miracle. Was it UNOS or a family member?"
"Actually, an old college friend. Her name is Carly Hendricks."
"Oh. Well as along as my husband stays alive, I don't care who it is." She said.
"Okay well I'm going to need you to go wait downstairs because I'm going to have Eric prepped for surgery." I said with a small smile. She nodded and kissed Eric's cheek before leaving. He was responsive and conscious but too weak for anything.
As I started getting him ready he got a hold of my wrist. I looked down at him.
"D-Don't." He said as he took a breath.
"Tell my w-wife." He finished referring to Carly.
"It's not my place to." I said to him. Edwards appeared at the door.
"She's all ready."
I nodded.
"I'm going to find another surgeon to operate on Carly." I said to her.
"Can you take care of him?" I asked. She nodded and I left.
Meredith was already doing a surgery of her own so I texted Owen.
Within seconds he replied saying he couldn't because he had an incoming patient but April was available. I told a nurse to page her to OR 3. I quickly went to OR 3 and was tieing my hair up when April pushed the door open.
"You paged?" She asked.
I nodded.
"Yes I need you to help me out with a liver transplant." I said.
She nodded.
"Great! Okay so your in OR 3 and I managed to pull some strings and I'm going to be across from you in OR 4." I said tieing my scrub cap.
"Who's assisting?"
"I have Edwards so you can have one of her interns unless you want to use your own resident."
I put my mask on. Edwards soon joined me and we read to go.
We were gowned by the nurses and as soon as another nurse said that April started we were going to cut.
"Let's hope he doesn't reject this." Edwards said.
I nodded. Then a nurse came in.
"Dr. Kepner has started." She said. I nodded.
"10 blade." I said extending my hand out.
*After getting through the skin layers and reaching the liver*
"Wow, it's incredible how fast our bodies can shut down." I said looking at the almost completely brown organ. An hour more and for sure his kidney's would start failing.
I disected all the vessels as a scrub nurse brought a bowl with ice. I removed the liver and put it in there as she took it away. Within seconds came in Dr. Wilson with a small portion of the new liver.
"Dr. Edwards would you like to do the honors?" I said looking at her. She nodded her head quickly. I took the liver from the bowl with ice and handed it to her. She carefully placed it and connected vessels. Now the most stressful part, waiting for it to turn pink.
"C'mon." I whispered. And just like that, it started pulsing and was pink. We all sighed in relief as the nurses cheered Stephanie on.
We doubled checked everything one last time.
"Congratulations on your first successful transplant Dr. Edwards. I think we're ready for closing." I said with a smile, even though it was not visible. I walked back into the scrub room and removed everything.
The door opened and a very handsome guy walked in.
"Told you, you would find a liver baby." Jackson said as he kissed my cheek.
I gave him a small smile.
"Yea I know." I said.
I finished washing my hands and then dried my hands.
"Finally, now I can do this." He said pulling me close to him and kissing me. I smiled into the kiss as I set my hands on his chest. I pulled away.
"Are you joining me for dinner tonight?" I asked.
"I can't. April's on call and I have to watch Harriet." He said.
"Why don't you bring her?" I said with a smile. His eyes widened.
"Really?"
I nodded.
"Yea, I actually didn't mention to my mom and sister that you had a daughter. I think it would be great if they met her." I said.
"Okay, what time?"
"We get off at 7:30, so is 8:30?"
He nodded.
"Perfect." He said before kissing my cheek.
"I got to go, I have a burn patient." He said. He left and I waited for Edwards to finish up so we can go infrom the family.
Edwards came in and started washing up.
"Thanks for that. You know, I'm more of a nuero girl, but I really enjoy being on your service." She said. I nodded with a smile.
"You're a great doctor and it's my job to make sure everyone see's it." I said.
She smiled and nodded.
"Let's go tell his family." I said heading for the door. We walked down to the waiting room and saw many more family members had arrive and their kids were back.
The two children ran up to me.
"Dr. Gates did you fix my daddy?" She asked as she pulled at the bottom of my shirt.
"Uhm no, I didn't. But you know who did, Dr. Edwards." I said pointing to her.
They ran up to her and gave her a big hug as the adults all hugged and smiled in releif.
"When can we see him?" Mrs. Nelson asked.
"He's in the ICU right now, so I don't think it will be a problem for you guys to see him. But he's still has a faint yellow color everywhere, but that should go away in the next day or so." I said. First Mrs. Nelson and the kids followed me first to go see him.
"He might still be somewhat drowsy from the anesthesia." I said as I let them in.
"I'll let you guys have some privacy."
I closed the sliding door and then went to check on Carly.
I found April checking her chart.
"Hey." I said opening the door.
"Hey, so the guy is all good?" She asked. I nodded.
She handed me the tablet.
"How was she in there?"
"She was good. Had a bit too much bleeding after I took the liver out, but I controlled it." April said.
Carly then started waking up.
"How did it go?" She said with a groggy voice.
"Eric is fine. And so are you." I said to her. She closed her eyes.
"Great. If any of his family members want to see me, please tell them I rather not." She said desperately.
"I'll see what I can do."
I then left with April.
"Why doesn't she wanna see them?" She asked confused.
"She's the husband's "girlfriend" " I said putting air quotations on girlfriend. Her eyes widened.
"And the wife is pregnant. Like a month along." I said giving the tablet to the nurse.
"Wow. That is, one mess." She said. I nodded letting my hair down. I checked my phone and saw it was 7:15.
"Well my shifts about done. I'll see you tomorrow. Goodnight." I said with a small smile before walking away. I went to the attendings lounge and changed. As soon as I got out of the bathroom in came Jackson, Maggie, Arizona, and Meredith.
"Hey guys." I said fixing my hair.
"Hey Mel, heard your transplant went well." Maggie said. I nodded.
"Ugh, I had a slow day. All I did was remove gallbladders." Mer said. I chuckled.
"I didn't. I had two bypass surgeries and a lady from the ER that has a mass right below her heart. We tested it to see if its cancerous or not." Maggie gloated.
"Oh lucky you." Meredith said sourly. We laughed at their bickering.
"Two of my babies died today. But on the other hand, Alex saved this baby with me. My neonatal skills came to work today." Arizona said.
"Oh Right, I totally forgot you're also a neonatal surgeon." I said to her.
"You're leaving on time for once, what's the occasion?" Mer asked.
"My mom and sister are in town." I said putting my jacket on.
"Oh really? How come you didn't even mention it?" Maggie said.
"It was a surprise. They showed up at my door this mornig." I said. Jackson chuckled.
"Yea we were sleeping and the doorbell rang. She was like go open the door. I was like its your house babe." Jackson told them.
"Seriously Mel?" Arizona said as they laughed.
"I was really tired okay!" I said jokigly throwing my hands up.
Meredith whispered something into Maggie and Arizona's ear as they raised their eyebrows at me while laughing.
"She said, you were to tired of Avery's dick." Arizona spilled. I shook my head at their corny jokes.
"Are you 12 Mer?" I asked shaking my head. Jackson just stood there licking his lips. I slung my purse over my shoulder and just smiled at them.
"Alright adolescents, I'm leaving. Byee." I waved to them. They waved back. I quickly pecked Jackson's lips.
"I'll see you later."
