"Dr. Gates, the patient, Mr. Davis' girlfriend is here." A nurse said to me as I read his charts.
"Tell her we are bringing him up to surgery right now, and that we'll keep her posted." I said to her as she nodded and walked off. The patient was being preped for surgery right now. Dr. Shepherd needs to get in his skull as soon as possible just as much as I need to stop the abdominal bleeding. Then Jackson is going to join us and try to salvage any healthy tissue from his thigh and possibly make a new skin graft for him.
I left my tablet at the nurse station and went to go scrub in.
"Have you gotten any solo surgeries yet?" I asked Wilson as we washed our hands.
"Yea, well kind of imI guess." She said. I raised an eyebrow.
"Let's just say there is a new Director for the residents program and she's trying to make the attendings give us a chance to participate much more and get solo surgeries. But theres been this huge problem becaude the old Director feels betrayed and it's just a whole mess." She said drying her hands.
"Well, a hospital wouldn't be a hospital with any drama I I guess." I said smiling at her. We tied the surgical face masks around our faces and walked through the automatic doors. The nurses gowned us and we met Dr. Shepherd inside.
"Jackson willbe joining us after I am done controlling the hematoma." Dr. Shepherd said.
"Sounds good, shall we start?" I said raising an eyebrow. She nodded and we all surrounded the patient.
*30 minutes into the surgery*
"Alright I'm almost about to wrap up so you can page Dr. Avery." Dr. Shepherd said.
"So, Dr. Gates, how's Grey-Sloan treating you so far?" She asked me.
"Pretty good actually." I said as I asked Wilson to suction.
"That's good, you can call me Amelia by the way. Everytime someone I'm going to be talking to on a regular basis calls me Dr. Shepherd constantly I feel weird." She said chuckling.
"Got it, and you can call me Melissa." I said. Just then as I was getting to remove the spleen, we had a bleeder and it splashed all over Wilson and I. His heart rate rised a bit.
"Okay, lap pads and suction." I said as a nurse wiped my face so I can get back to work.
"He's good over here, page me if anything changes please." Amelia said before scrubbing out. Once the bleeder was controlled I removed the spleen and his heart rate normalized immediately.
I set it in a bowl and the nurse took it away.
"Wilson, care to close up?" I said to her.
"Of course." She said. I let her get in and then went out to scrub out. I ran into Jackson.
"Woah, surgery and blood shower on the first day..nice." He said smiling.
I rolled my eyes playfully as I untied the gown and threw it out. I started washing my hands and anywhere where I might've gotten some blood.
"He's all yours Dr. Avery." I said to him as he tied his mask.
I dried my hands and walked out of the room. I went into the Attending's lounge and took a quick shower. I got out and changed back into a new pair of scrubs.
I got out of the bathroom and found myself with another doctor.
"Hey, are you the new trauma fellow?" She asked. I nodded.
"Melissa Gates." I said extending my hand out.
"April Kepner." She said shaking it.
"Ah so you're the other trauma fellow." I said. She nodded.
"Get anything good so far?" She asked.
"Just a guy that was in an accident, removed his spleen." I said brushing my hair.
"Better than me, I've just been in the ER searching for something." She said. I gave her a small smile.
"Oh well, there will be something sooner or later." I said.
"Some of the doctors and I are going out for drinks at the bar across the street you should come." She said.
"What time?" I asked.
"After our shift ends so 8." She said.
"Sounds fun, I'll be there." I said smiling before leaving. I walked to Mark Davis' room to check on his labs and see how he's doing.
"Hey, how's his leg?" I asked Jackson.
"I salvaged alot of good tissue and made a skin graft. So, he should be okay in a couple of weeks." He said.
"Sounds good. His labs came back and everything seems to be well. Shall we go talk to his girlfriend?" I said to him.
He nodded. Just then Amelia caught up to us and we all went in together.
"Hi, I'm Dr. Gates, This is Dr. Shepherd and that's Dr. Avery. We are you're boyfriends doctors." I said to the girl.
"Oh hi, I'm Mandy. Is he okay?" She asked scared.
We all nodded.
"He's fine. With the surgeries we all performed he seems to be doing well. Now just to wait untill he wakes up and gets a full reovery." Jackson said to her.
She smiled in relief and hugged all of us.
"Get used to it, there's alot of huggers here in seattle." Jackson whispered in my ear.
"So, we're still going to keep a close eye on him. When he wakes up we'll come back and explain the precautions he has to take." Amelia explained.
She nodded.
"Thank You guys for everything. What about the other guy, the one who caused the acciedent." She asked. I looked at Amelia and Jackson because I was unsure of what to say.
"We can't really share that information with non family memebers." Jackson responded.
"Oh, Okay I guess." She said.
"We'll be back later." I said to her with a small smile.
She nodded and went back to holding her boyfriend's hand as we left the ICU.
"You're coming for drinks tonight with us right?" Amelia asked me.
"Yea, I got the invite already." I said chuckling.
"What about you Jacksy poo." Amelia said. I raised an eyebrow and chuckled at her nickname for him. Jackson rolled his eyes.
"I don't know, if April's going then that means I'm staying home with Harriet." He explained. Wait, April and Jackson
have a baby? And her name is Harriet.
"Who's Harriet?" I asked.
"My daughter." Jackson said smiling.
Oh.
"Aw, how old is she." I asked him.
"She's about 8 months old now. Here look at her." He said pulling out his phone showing me a picture of her.
"Wow, she looks just like you." I said to him. He nodded.
Amelia got paged.
"Crap gotta go, see you in a bit." She said running of.
"So you and April are married?" I asked.
"Well, we used to be. It was a crazy mess. But we got divorced and then she ended up pregnant." He said as we walked back to the lounge together.
"Oh that's somethint." I said raising an eyebrow.
"It's okay, you don't have to be awkward about it." He said.
"Oh and April is going because she's the one that kind of invited me." I said licking my lips.
"Oh well, maybe next time. I don't know why but I'm looking foward to see you drunk." He said with a cheeky smirk.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I said with furrowed eyebrows. I took my coat off and hung it on a hanger and put it in the closet along with the others.
"You just don't seem like the partying type." He said to me smirking.
He's hitting me with the "type" card just like I did this morning.
I rolled my eyes playfully.
"Oh baby, you clearly just met me. I'm a total party person. Angel on the outside, devil on the inside." I said winking.
He had a surprised face on and held his hands up in the air.
"Okay, whatever you say." He said licking his lips.
"Plus, you don't seem like the partying type either." I said to him. He took his shirt off and my eyes immediately traveled to his torso. Okay, he's hot and has a killer body Lord help me.
"I'm not, I drink but it's not like I go overboard." He said putting his other shirt on. I took my sneakers off and put the back in my cubby.
I left an undershirt underneath my scrubs so I took my shirt off and put the other one ontop.
"Fair." I said to him. I then got up and went to the bathroom and put my jeans on. After I was done I went to throw my scrubs away and put my boots on.
Jackson then went into the bathroom and came out changed.
"I have to go pick up Harriet from day care you wanna come with me and meet her?" Jackson asked.
"Uhm I don't really-" I started but he cut me off by saying:
"Oh come on, please! You still have time until you have to literallt cross the street and go to the bar." He said. I put my jacket on.
"Fine, only because Harriet looks adorable." I said grabbing my purse. He smiled and nodded. We then left the lounge and to the elevator.
Jackson got a call from April.
"Hey, yea I'm on my way to get her right now." He said into the phone.
"I heard, it's fine I can stay with her."
"Yes April, it's fine. Just go." He said more sternly.
He then hung up and I looked up at him.
"Everything okay?" I asked him.
He sighed and nodded.
"Yea, we just got into a fight over this new Director of Residents thing and we just haven't been on the best terms since." He said. I nodded and the elevator doors opened.
We walked through some doors and into the daycare. There were surprisingly a couple of kids here considering most of the doctors are pretty young here.
"There she is." Jackson said grabbing Harriet from the Daycare worker.
"Hey baby girl, you ready to go home with dada." He said as he kissed her cheek. They gave Jackson her diaper bag and we were on our way.
"Okay baby, I want you to meet someone. This is Melissa." He said handing her to me.
He caught me by surprise and I gave her a nervous smile.
"Hi cutie! You are so adorable." I said to her as she gave me a smile.
"Wow she's really good with strangers." I said to Jackson.
"Yea, she gets it from me." He said smirking. I rolled my eyes because I knew he was talking about me.
"Let's hope you don't have your dad's cockiness." I said in a baby voice.
"Hey!" Jackson yelled. I laughed and we were now in the parking lot. We walked to his car and it was time to say goodbye.
"Have a good night little baby." I said handing her back to Jackson. He buckled her in her seat. He then closed the door.
"Well, I'm going to get going." I said to him as I shoved my hands in my pocket.
"See you tomorrow?" He said more in a question.
"Yea, she you tomorrow." I said smiling before walking away.
Now, to meet my other colleagues.
