*2 months Later*
Well, the past months have been......different. I felt like I really had not many people to talk too or share moments that happened in my day. That's what I had Jackson for. I never really payed attention to it but Jackson was technically like my bestfriend here and now I didn't really have one. Sure I talk to all of the girls and guys here but it's different. I just wish I still had someone to spill all my guts out to whenever. I still keep my distance from Jackson. We only talk if we really have too like if we are on a case together or something but other than that, it's like he's just some EMT I see on a regular basis when they bring in a patient.
I was at the nurse sation looking at my tablet about to log off when I heard a familar hoarse voice.....it was too familiar. I turned my head to the side and saw Jackson and a guy walking out from surgery it seemed. My eyes widened when I saw who it was and his eyes met him. His mouth formed a smile.
"Melissa?" He asked excitedly.
"Ryan?" I said walking closer to them. He smiled and nodded as we both gave each other a big hug. I smiled really big. You never know how much you miss someone until you see them again after a long time.
"You too know each other?" Jackson butted in with a confised look.
"Yea I do infact, she's my ex-girlfriend." He said quickly.
"Ah there he is straight to the point Ryan Jennings." I said looking up at him with a smile. Ryan was really special to me. We dated for like 3 years, most of my residency before we both parted our seperate ways and decided to break up since we both weren't into the long distance thing.
"Hey you know what, I'll catch you later. I think I'm just going to catch up with M right now." Ryan said to Jackson. I could see Jacksons jaw clench at the thought of Ryan and I alone, together. But he just nodded and left.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him.
"Well, Jackson needed a really amazing Ophthalmologist and you know I happen to be one of them so here I am." He said with a smirk.
I playfully rolled my eyes and nodded. It was the truth though, Ryan was one of the best Ophthalmologist in the East Coast. He's an attending at NYU hospital back in NY.
"So enough about me, how are things going with you here? It's been like what 4 months that you've been here?" He asked me as we reached the cafeteria and got some coffee.
"It's been pretty great. Most of the people are amazing here. I gotta admit I do miss NY alot though." I said to him as I sipped my coffee. We sat down at a table.
"You should come visit. You know you're family is there and we could always hang out too." He said to me. I nodded.
"Yea I know. But I'm just still getting hsed to the groove here and if I go back home to visit now, I'll just be thrown off track and get homesick. But I will in the future ofcourse. Not doubt in that." I said to him with a smile. We caught up on a bunch of stuff and it was probably one of the best days I've had in a while.
We are now walking to my car.
"So until when are you in town?" I asked him.
"Two more days." He said licking his lips.
I stuck my lip out like a little girl.
"Aw, I was hoping to spending some more time with you. Today was really fun catching up." I said to him. He nodded.
"Let's go for some dinner and drinks tomorrow. I heard there's a bar across the street from here." He said. I nodded.
"Yes there is, it's basically where everyone hangs out after their shifts."
"Sounds good, I'm only going to be in the hospital for two hours to check on the patient but other than that I'll be roaming the streets of Seattle. I'll be here to pick you up tomorrow at the same time as now." He said. I nodded.
I gave him a hug goodbye as we parted ways.
*The Next Day around lunch time*
"Dr. Gates, there's a woman named Amanda Fairbee here to see you." A nurse said walking up to me. I raised an eyebrow. Why would she be here? Last time I saw her she decided to get an abortion and do therapy. I nodded and followed the nurse. She was sitting in a consult room talking to Jackson. She looked as normal looking as one can look. She no longer had bruises or cuts. She was a very pretty girl. I knocked on the door and walked inside closing the door behind me.
"Dr. Gates." She said with a smile.
"Hi Amanda." I said to her smiling back. She then pulled me into a hug.
"You look great." I said to her.
"Thank you. I have been getting better and I wanted to let you know how I am. You really helped me and made me finally stop feeling scared and I will be forever grateful for you." She said to me.
"Oh please, I did nothing. I'm glad you are better thougj, you deserve to be." I said.
"Yea and now Dr. Avery says my nose is all good now so, I can finally start living a normal life." She said. I nodded and gave her a small smile. Her phone dinged.
"Alrighth, it's been great seeing you guys but since I'm done here I have to get going. I have a lunch date with my mom." She said getting up. What a late lunch, it's almost 3. She gave Jackson and I a hug before leaving.
"Hey do you know where Dr. Jennings is?" Jackson asked me as he pursed his lips.
"No, he said he was going to go out and explore the city but then come in to check on your guys' post-op. Is he not here yet?" I asked. He shook his head no.
"Did you try calling him?" I asked. He nodded.
"Like 10 times already." He said as we walked out. My phone started dinging. It was 911 page to the ER.
"I hope you find him, if I see him around I'll let you know." I said walking off and running down the stairs to the pit. Stephanie Edwards was on my service this week. We both put on the disposable gowns as the ambulances pulled in.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw who it was.
"Ryan Jennings, 26 year old Male. Got run over by a bus while he was biking. Multiple fractions and bruising. Possibly have abdominal bleeding. His right pupil is blown so there's definitely some bleeding. Vitals are stable for now, but he's been unconscious." The EMT said as we pushed him inside. My heart was pounding hard and it felt like it was going to come out of my chest. We brought him into Trauma Room 1 as the rest of the doctors and nurses waited for me to give directions. I stood there in shock.
"Dr. Gates, what would you like us to start him on?" Edwards sais to me.
"Dr. GATES?!" She yelled waving in front of my face.
"I'm sorry I can't do this." I said before walking out.
"Page Dr. Hunt and Dr. Shepherd now for Trauma Room 1 I'm no longer on that case." I said as tears threatened to fall. I quickly took my gown off and gloves and threw them out. I ran to the stairs and went to look for Jackson. I had to tell him that Ryan was not going to make it to the post-op consult. Tears ran down my cheeks. I was really scared right now. The vision of him laying there bleeding, bruised, and all cut up made me sick to the stomach. I finally found Jackson walking in the hallway about to go into the Lounge.
"Jackson." I said faintly. Yet, he still heard me. His eyes widened and he ran to me, probaly startled by my face. I was hysterically crying and he looked confused.
"Mel what happened?" He asked as he wrapped his arms around me. I didn't care if I was mad at him right now
I just needed someone to hold me.
"R-Ryan, he was my 9--11 page." I stuttered. I heard him curse and say "oh my god" under his breath but he still held me.
"Don't worry, he's going to be fine." He said to me pulling away. I shook my head.
"No Jackson! You didn't see him. He looked absolutely terrible!" I yelled at him through tears. I ran my hands through my hair as I bit my lip and paced around.
"Wow he really means that much to you?" Jackson asked snarkily. That remark got me upset.
"Jackson don't you dare start this with me, not right now." I said through gritted teeth as I stared at him with anger.
"I'm not Mel, I swear. I just never seen you like this." He said trying to calm me down.
"I'm scared Jackson. Ryan does mean alot to me. He was my boyfriend for most of my residency. He's special to me. I love him." I said as more tears fell. Even with my blurred vision I saw Jackson's expression fall when I saw I loved Ryan.
"I think you should just go check on your patient. I'll be fine here." I said to him as I licked my lips.
"Mel, you're more important, how can I just leave you here when you're like this?!" He said desperately.
"Just go Jackson. Ryan would want you too." I insisted. He gave up and left.
I walked inside the lounge and angrily threw the pillows on the couch on the floor. It always seems like I can't have something good in my life because something bad always seems to come in and ruin it all.
