*6 months later*
I finished signing the last paper.
"Well congratulations Dr. Gates, you are now an offical attending at Grey-Sloan Memorial." Bailey said with a smile.
I smiled back at her.
"Well what are you waiting for, get to work!" She fake yelled. I chuckled at her and then left her office.
Yes, I completed my one year fellowship here at Grey-Sloan! I just finished signing my 2 year contract and am on my way back to the attendings lounge to get changed. I opened the door and everyone yelled
"Congratulations!"
I was a bit startled but a smile formed on my lips as I saw everyone.
I got many hugs and even more congratulations.
The other attendings had set up a small breakfast buffet in celebration.
"Thank you guys so much! I'm so happy to be offically part of the team." I exclaimed putting my bag down.
We all ate breakfast and then they had to go. I got changed and then was on my way to my rounds. In case you're wondering where Jackson is, he had an emergency surgery this morning but should be out soon.
I went on finished my rounds and made my way to the ER.
I was in the middle of signing a paper when a guy around my age came running through the ambulance bay doors.
"I need a doctor, someone help!" He yelled. My eyes met him as I set the pen down. I grabbed a pair of gloves and ran to him.
"I'm Dr. Gates how can I help?" I asked. He was trembling and had a scrape on his arm.
"My friend, he's hurt."
"Take me to him."
"Can someone follow us with a gourney please and page Dr. DeLuca." I yelled before running off. We ran to the end of the block and there was another guy laying on the floor.
"Cam I got a doctor." The guy that came to find me said.
"Hi Cam, I'm Dr. Gates." I said as I kneeled down next to me.
He had an abdominal lassarastion and a small part of his small intestine was on display.
"What's your name?" I asked the friend as I checked him for any more open wounds.
"I'm Chad."
"Okay Chad wanna tell me how this happened?"
"This guy was speeding and we were crossing the street and then this guy passes the red light and just missed me but took Cam down. He was hit in the middle of the street but landed over here."
I quickly gave him a nuero exam. Insanely, it was perfect. He didn't show of any hematomas or anything.
His face was all scraped and cut. And his arms had glass stuck in them.
DeLuca came running towards us with a couple of nurses and a gourney.
"Okay Cam, we're going to take you to the hospital alright. I need you to stay still and calm."
He nodded.
A wrong movement and this man could he paralyzed. Considering he was literally flung over here there has to be damage to his spine and hopefully no fluid has escaped.
We carefully put on a neck brace on him and moved him onto the gourney and quickly rushed to the hospital.
"Trauma 2. Watch out!" I yelled to the people in the way. A nurse outside of trauma 2 opened the door and we got inside. We carefully set him down on the examination table.
I put a sterile covering over the noticable intestine and secured it.
"Page Dr. Shepherd please." I said.
I looked at him.
"Okay Cam, you're going to need surgery. I'm going to have to repair a laceration in your abdomen. But first, I'm going to have Dr. Shepherd check your spine and make sure we can move you." I explained.
"Okay."
Amelia showed up in the door way.
"How can I help?" She asked putting her gloves on.
"I'm not sure if I should move him or not. He was struck pretty badly and I don't want to paralize him."
She nodded and did her thing.
While she checked him I tried to gently take out the pieces of glass lodged in his arm.
"You got very lucky, the only thing you hurt was a small disk on your lower back." She explained to him. He closed his eyes in relief.
"Position him however for surgery but, keep his bottom left side elevated."
I nodded.
DeLuca took him upstairs and got him prepped as I went to go look for Chad.
"Okay, so he's going to need surgery. I'm just going to repair his abdominal wall. Amazingly he didn't do anything serious to his back except herniate a disk on his lower back but it's not that serious."
His face of worry relaxed.
"Also if you could contact any family that would be great." I added.
He nodded.
"Yea definitely. Thank you." He said. I nodded and made my way to the ER.
I scrubbed in as DeLuca joined me.
"Congrats, I heard you finally signed your offical contract today." He said. I nodded.
"Yes I did, thank you." I said with a small smile.
We got in the OR and were gowned.
This was a quick procedure if everything goes well.
I made the first cut and picked up a clamp as DeLuca incised the blood vessels.
"So he was a hit and run?" He asked. I nodded.
"The guy that hit him must've been going so fast because his friend told me he was hit in the middle of the street and landed on the other side of the block where we got him."
DeLuca raised his eyebrows.
"Wow he got so lucky he isn't paralyzed right now."
I nodded in agreement.
"That's exactly what I said. And the weird part is that he seems so familiar. I feel like I know him from somewhere but I don't remeber." I said irrigating the part of the intestine that was exposed. DeLuca put it back into place after I was done repairing.
"Now if everything goes well, a hernia doesn't form" I said. We closed up and then scrubbed out. Once we got outside I updated his chart and then waited for him to get transferred to a room in ICU.
I then went to the waiting room to find Chad.
He quickly got up from his chair when he saw me.
"How is he?" He asked worried.
"He did great in surgery and we're expecting a good recovery." I said to him with a small smile. He smiled in relief and exhaled.
"Thank God. Is there anyway I can see him? I called his parents but they live in NY and are looking for a flight. His girlfriend hasn't answered my calls." He explained.
"Oh, yes of course you can see him. Let me just find out what room they took him into and then I'll bring you to him."
He nodded.
I opened my phone and texted DeLuca.
"Room ICU6"
"Alright you can follow me." I said. I led him upstairs and then we went inside his room. He was ofcourse still sleeping and someone called Chad.
"I have to take this, if we wakes up tell him I'll be back." He said before leaving the room.
I took a look at his chart and saw his full name.
Cameron Jax Gilliam.
That sounded so familiar... Oh my God.
I saw him slowly shifting as he struggled to breathe on his own with the tubes coming out of his mouth. I took them out as he relaxed.
"How did everything go?" He asked weakly.
"It went well. You did great."
I bit my lip... should I tell him or not?
"CJ" I let out hoping he would recognize me. I was the only one that called him that.
His eyes met mine.
I stepped closer and his eyes widened.
"Mel? It's you?" He asked.
