After I finished eating breakfast, I went upstairs and got ready to go to the hospital. I wish they would've let me know they were going to be coming so I could've taken some days off. I quickly grabbed my bag and walked downstairs.
"Alright I have to get going. There's an extra set of keys in the bowl by the door, and you guys get settled in the guest bedrooms. I'll see you guys later." I said hugging both of them. They nodded and I walked out the door.
I got to the hospital and made my way into the lounge. Everyone must've already gone to do their rounds, or at least I thought. As I was grabbing some new scrubs to put on April walked out of the bathroom. She completely ignored my presence and kept her head down.
I sighed and spoke up.
"April, can we talk?" I said to her. She stopped and turned around. I put the scrubs down as I walked closer to her.
"I know my relationship with Jackson most likely caught you off guard." I started off.
"Ya think?" She answered back. I ignored her remark and kept going.
"I just want you to give me a chance with him. Look, I will always respect that you guys are going to have a special relationship because you two have a beautiful daughter together. And I'm sure both of you were deeply in love with each other but...now it's me and him. It would be amazing if you were on board with it, and I get it if you're not. But please don't let it affect us professionally. " April nodded.
"Okay....just give me some time. I need to process all of this." She said running her hands over her ponytail. I nodded.
"Ofcourse." I answered. She then left and I exhaled. Definitely felt a huge weight off my shoulders. I quickly changed and ran into Dr. Bailey on my way out.
"Good Morning Dr. Gates." She said. I greeted her back.
"Dr. Bailey, my mom and sister surprised me this morning and I wanted to ask if I could take a couple of days off?" I asked her. She nodded.
"Ofcourse, just let me know the days and swing by my office later." She said as she started to walk away.
"Will Do, Thank You!" I said as I walked away too.
I grabbed a tablet from a nurse station and signed in. I saw I had gotten some labs back from a patient I had last night.
"Crap" I mumbled to myself. His AST and ALT levels were extremely elevated. This means the patient's liver is extremely damaged and is on the border of failing. I found Dr. Edwards by the patients room.
"I was just about to page you...he's in liver failure." She said as we stared at my now yellow patient. The blood flow to his liver must be diminished from the shock.
"Call UNOS stat. He has to be at the top of the donor's list. Have an intern call his family and see if they are compatible with him. Meanwhile, I'm going to go around looking for a liver here." I said to her. She nodded. I quickly ran off and started wandering through the halls. I swear I keep running into people accidentally today.
"Hey Mel." Meredith said to me as she took her scrub cap off.
"Early surgery?" I asked. She nodded.
"I need a liver. My patient needs a liver in the next 5 hours or he's going to die." I said to her.
"Called UNOS and family already?" She asked. I nodded.
"Edwards is calling UNOS and we've had interns calling family since last night and no one has turned up ye-" I was about to finish when someone called my name.
"Dr. Gates, This is Eric's Nelson's wife and kids." DeLuca said bringing them to me. Thank God the family showed up.
Meredith nodded and I went to walk towards the family.
"Hi Mrs. Nelson I'm Dr. Gates." I said extending my hand for her to shake. She seemed very scared and worried.
She had a little 6 year old looking boy clutching to her hand and a 3 year old looking girl holding her waist.
"These are my kids, Nathan and Ellie. How is my husband?" She asked.
"Where's Daddy?" The little girl spoke up.
"Can I speak to you in private?" I asked her. She looked down at her kids.
"I have no watch them." She said.
I quickly grabbed the nearest nurse I can find.
"Hey, can you do me a huge favor and watch these two cuties while I talk to their mom?" I said with pleading eyes to a nurse. She nodded and took their hands.
"Is my daddy going to be okay?" The little boy said tugging at the end of my coat. I bend down to his level.
"Well Nathan, me and some other doctors are doing everything we can to fix your daddy up okay?" I said rubbing his head. He nodded.
"Okay." He answered leaving with the nurse.
I took Mrs. Nelson into a conference room.
"Please take a seat Mam." I said. I sat down with her and set my tablet down.
"Your husband has suffered many injuries. But one of them is putting his life in danger. Mr. Nelson is in liver failure. We need to find him a liver transplant as soon as possible or in as little as in 5 hours your husband can be dead." I said to her. She covered her mouth as tears fell.
"We have called UNOS and are making sure he is being moved up to the top of the transplant list. I would like you to maybe contact his siblings or cousins. I want to run some tests to see if your a match with him, and the others too." I said to her. She nodded quickly.
"Okay, I will tell my resident to draw some blood from you and then I'd like you to make some calls please."
She took a deep breath before grabbing her phone and started calling. I left the room and saw Edwards was back.
"I managed to get him at the top of the list but he's O-. They are looking for a match with his blood type." She said. I closed my eyes for a brief moment. I reopened them and nodded.
"Alright, his wife and kids are here. She's in the conference room right here. I need you to run some tests on her and she's contacting more family." I explained to Edwards. She nodded. I walked away and went back to the nurse that had the children.
"Hey guys, mommy has to do some stuff for daddy right now. So why don't you guys go to the play room of the hospital. I'm sure you'll find some friends to play with." I said to them with smile. They jumped up excitedly.
"I'll take them, thank you for watching them." I said to the nurse.
She nodded.
"Anytime Dr. Gates." She said as she left. I had one of the holding my left hand and the other on the right. I took the elevator down to the first floor and then walked to day care.
"Alright guys go ahead in." I said letting go of their hands.
Susan, the lady in charge of the daycare walked up to me.
"Hey, these are a patient of mines kids. Nathan and Ellie. They'll be here for a little bit untill their mom is done with some tests." I said to her. She nodded. Just then I felt a tug on the bottom of my jacket.
"Mel!" I heard a small voice yell.
I smiled and picked Harriet up.
"Hey cutie, I haven't seen you in a while." I said kissing her cheek. She giggled as she gave me a hug.
"You look so pretty today, I love your dress." I said as I straightened it out a bit. She batted her long eyelashes at me. Just then I heard a throat clear behind us. It was Jackson.
"Daddy!" She said as she jumped out of my arms and extended her arms for him. He laughed at her eagerness and took her into his arms while kissing her cheeks repeatedly. He then turned his attention to me.
"What brings you here?" He asked me surprised as he held me with his other arm.
"Came to drop off one of my patients kids. Then this little one came up to me so I was saying hi to her." I said tapping her nose as she squealed.
"I love that you too get along so well." He said to me.
I smiled.
"She's a great baby." I said holding her hand. Harriet looked up and pointed to the walkway in front of us.
"Mama!" She exclaimed. Jackson and I turned around and saw April walking towards us.
"Oh yea, we are having lunch together." He said to me. My phone dinged as April made her way to us.
It was a text from Edwards saying more family was here.
"I gotta go, Bye Harriet." I said tickling her. She laughed loudly as April finally reached us.
"Wow you're very smiley today." April said to Harriet.
"I have to get going. Bye enjoy your lunch!" I said to them. Jackson made Harriet wave goodbye to me. I smiled at her as I walked away. Now to see if there's a compatible liver donor because we are down to 4 hours.
