"Here they are." Wilson said handing  me the tablet. And by her face I already knew the results, and I'm afraid I was right.
"Okay, one more test before telling her.
Let's run a CT." I said to Wilson. She went to go transfer Mary into a room and then bring her to the CT room.
I walked to the CT room.
"Hey, can I get a slot for right now?" I asked the guy sitting in the chair.
"You're lucky there's no one scheduled right now...so yes." He said before getting up and leaving. I sat down on the chair as Wilson and her interns put Mary on the CT bed. I got off the chair and went to her side of the room.
I told the interns they could leave and told Wilson to wait for me by the computer.
"Hi Mary, how are you feeling?" I asked her with a small smile.
"My pain has lessened with the pain killers. Is everything all right, why am I getting a CT for a simple stomach pain?" She asked worried.
I grabbed her hand reassuringly.
"Don't be scared. Not right now. We just want to run as many tests as we can to give you the right diagnosis..okay?" I said to her.
She nodded and squeezed my hand tight one last time before I went to the computer.
I pressed the intercom button so I can speak to her.
"Okay Mary now you're going to hold still for me." I said as Wilson pressed the button and she was slowly moved into the machine. We waited a couple of minutes until the scans finally showed up on the computer.
"Crap." I said running my hands over my face.
"There it is." Wilson said with a sad face as she pointed to her left ovary.
"Yup, and it's huge." I said.
"Why don't you get an intern to call her family members and when they get here we'll tell them the news.
She nodded.
I got up from my chair and pressed the button to take her out. I got her back on the hospital bed and rolled her back to her room. Once I got her settled in she grabbed my wrist.
"Now can you please tell me what's going on?" She asked me with plead. I sighed.
"Mary, don't you wait for your family members to come so they can be wi-" She cute me off by saying no.
"I need to know now, so I can prepare them and tell them what ever this is." She said.
I took a deep breath.
"Mary, we found some alarming things in your labs. That's why we did the CT to confirm. We found a cyst in your left ovary Mary. Normally we would have to perform a biopsy to see if it is malignant, but from your blood work it has been confirmed. I'm so sorry Mary, but you have ovarian cancer." I said to her. Her mouth widened as she started to cry.
"This can't be true." She said still holding on to me.
She pulled me into a tight hug.
"I'm so sorry Mary." I said as I rubbed her back. It broke my heart to see her like this, especially because it's not the first time I've dealt with an ovarian cancer case. I got a bit teary eyed.
"I'm going to give you some time to process this okay. I'll be back later when your family is here." I said to her. She nodded and let go of me. I quickly got out of her room. I needed a place to be alone right now. I found a supply room and quickly got inside it. I walked to the back of the room and slowly slid down and sat on the floor as I started to cry. I was crying so hard that I was sure I couldn't breathe anymore.
I heard the door open but there was nothing I could do to hide the way I was feeling.
"Melissa?" Jackson said looking for me. Once he spotted me on the floor his face softened.
"I saw you come in here, are you okay?" He asked me as he sat down next to me. I shook my head no.
"Do you want to talk about it?" He whispered.
I shook my head no once again.
He nodded and just held me close to his chest. After a couple of minutes I calmed down. I pulled away from him and wiped my face.
"I'm sorry you had to see me like this." I said to him.
"What happened?" He asked me concerned.
"I just had to tell my patient she had ovarian cancer. And when I was 16,
they discovered a cyst in my ovary.
They took it out and thank God it was benign and I was fine. But seeing her heart break like that made me think, that could've been me in that bed." I said biting my lip and looking down. He picked my face up with his finger.
"Well it isn't. And I thank God for that too because then I wouldn't have met you and wouldn't have been able to do this." He said right before he kissed me. It took me by surprise by but I wrapped my hands around his neck and deepend the kiss. He lifted me by my waist and set me on his lap. I pulled away as we caught our breaths. He set his hands on my face as we pressed foreheads.
"Now that you're okay, you're going to go back to that lady and get the best gynecologic-oncologist you can find and save her." He said. I bit my lip and nodded.
"Let's go." He said as I got off him. He stood up and hugged me one last time.
"I'll see you later and we can continue this." He whispered into my ear before leaving the room.
I stayed in the room for a couple of
minutes breathing hard.
Did I really just let Jackson Avery kiss me? So much for not dating people I work with again... I took a deep breath and fixed my hair and made sure my face looked presentable.
I walked out of the room and was paged by Wilson to Mary's room. Her family is probably here.
I saw her room filled with 2 women and 2 men as well.
"Wilson, do you know who the best gynecologic- oncologist in this hoslital is?" I asked her.
"I don't know, I've never worked with one of them before." She answered.
I quickly texted Meredith and asked her.
She texted back Dr. Knox.
"Page Dr.Knox." I said to Wilson. She nodded.
Minutes later I was approached by him.
"Did some page Dr. Knox?"A man said.
I quickly looked up from my tablet.
"I did." I said to him. He nodded and walked over to me.
"Dr. Gates, nice to meet you." I said extending my hand out to him. He shook it.
"So what can I help with?" He asked.
"I have this patient, her name is Mary Jenkins, 48 year old female. I have diagnosed her with ovarian cancer." I said to him.
"May I see her tests?" He asked.
"Ofcourse." I said opening her file and handing the tablet to him.
"Wow, this looks pretty advanced. Might be in stage 2B or 2C." He said shaking his head.
"What has the patient decided to to?" He asked handing back the tablet.
"I don't know. I'm going in to talk to her and her family right now. I already spoke to her she knows her condition. But I want you to be there with me when I tell the family so she knows she has you as an option." I said.
"Alright then shall we." He said waiting for me to lead him. I walked to her door and knocked before walking in.
"Hi everyone, I'm Dr. Gates and this is Dr. Knox." I said walking inside.
"Dr. Gates these are my children. That is Katie and Sara, and those two are Jacob and Mason." She said pointing to them.
"Nice to meet all of you." I said with a small smile.
"What's wrong with our mom?" asked Sara which seemed to be the youngest. She looked about 16.
I looked at Mary to see if she was ready for me to tell them. She gave me a small nod.
"So we have run various labs and tests on your mom. But I'm afraid to tell you guys that, your mom has ovarian cancer. I'm sorry." I said. One by one face by face, they all dropped. It was silent. I could tell everyone was in shock.
I cleared my throat.
"I have some options. This is Dr. Knox. He is a gynecologic-oncologist. He will explain the process and the steps Mary will have to consider in taking." I said. They nodded with tears in their eyes.
"Now, I'm going to exit. I'm no longer your doctor Mary since you do not need my help under my specialty. You are Dr. Knox's patient." I said to Mary.
"Wait. Come close." She said to me. I dis as told.
"Thank you for everything Dr. Gates." She said as she squeezed my hand. I nodded and gave her a sympathetic smile. I let go and exited the room. I finally felt like I could breathe again.
"Hey, you okay?" Arizona said as she walked up to me. I nodded.
"Yea, just had to tell a patient difficult news and it really got to me." I said.
"But i'm good now. How was your day?" I asked her with a small smile.
"I lost a baby today." She said with a frown.
"Aw, loosing kids is always the worst." I said.
"Oh you're telling the Chief or Ped's that" She said with a hint of sarcasticness in her voice. I smiled.
"You going home now?" She asked.
I nodded. We walked to the lounge together.
"So guess what happened today.." I sais to Arizona casually. She raised an eyebrow and said "What?!"
I couldn't help but form a smile on my lips and said :
"Jackson kissed me."
She mouth widened.
"What? How did that even happen?" She said.
"I don't know we've just been connecting alot the days i've been here." I said.
"Does April know?" She asked. I shook my head.
"No, at least I don't think so. It happened like an hour ago." I said.
We reached the lounge and stopped outside the door.
"Well I'm happy for you but just watch out. This can bring good and a bad to you okay." She said.
"Okay." I said with furrowed eyebrows.
"I'm not leaving yet I have one more patient to check on so, good night." She said before walking off. I shrugged of what she said to me and went inside.
I grabbed my clothes and bag out and set it on the couch.
Just then the bathroom door opened and Jackson came out. I looked up at him as he shot me a smile.
"Hi." I said.
"Hey." He said licking his lips.
"How'd it go?" He said rubbing my shoulders.
"Well, it went as best as it could I guess." I said.
"Well you did everything you could. Now it's up to..." He said waiting for me to tell him the doctors name.
"Dr. Knox." I said.
"Oh he's good. But yea it's all up to him." He said.
I nodded.
"I'm going to get changed." I said to him.
He nodded and let go of me.
"Wait, but before that.." He said as he caressed the side of my face with his hand and crashes his lips onto mine.
Since I wasn't crying this time, it was much more enjoyable. It was like a rush running through my body. I pulled away and he smiled at me.
"Now you can go." He said. I chuckled and went.
As much as I don't want to, I'm falling for him.
