*One month later*
My mom and sister left a week ago and I miss them already. Wondering about what happened with the incident? Well I gave my statement to the police and left it at that. I decided it was unhealthy for me so I just put it behind me. Everything's been back on track and Jackson and I are closer than ever. I guess some bad things have some positive to them.
The end of my shift was near so I decided to just check up on some labs and CT results for patients. I was about to go ask Meredith for a consult when I got paged 911 to the ER. I gave the labs to a nurse and then quickly ran. I put my gown on as I had DeLuca meet me there. I had no resident today because Edwards was sick, so I was using her interns.
"What do we have?" I asked him. Before he could answer Dr. Bailey and Webber came running in.
Dr. Hunt was also gowning himself.
"Is there something I'm unaware of?" I asked confused. It was rare that all of these surgeons were needed for what I think is one patient.
"The patient is April." Dr. Bailey said as she put her gloves on. My eyes widened.
"1 minute." The nurse yelled. We all ran out to the back as we waited anxiously.
Just then Aprils body was pushed out.
"Dr. April Kepner, 28. Multiple Traumas, including free fluid in the abdomen, subdural hematoma, conscious, but not not for long." He said. Hunt and Bailey took over her.
"Dr. Gates you take the next one. It's Harriet." Dr. Bailey said. I nodded. It was silent as they pushed her into the ER. Once the ambulance left the next one pulled in. Out walked an EMT with a crying Harriet in arms.
"I believe this is Dr. Kepners daughter. All she seems to have is a cut on her head that needs stiches but other than that she has no serious trauma." She said handing me Harriet. Harriets face softned when she saw me, a familiar face.
"I got her." I said to Dr. Webber as he nodded. I pulled her into my chest as I rubbed her back.
"It's okay baby." I whispered to her. I walked back inside the ER and into April's trauma room.
"Wait! Melissa come closer." April breathed out. I did as told and she held Harriet's hand.
"I love you baby girl. You're going to be okay with daddy. I'm sorry." She spoke. I shook my head at her.
"April you're not going anywhere, stop." I said as tears threatened to fall. Deep down I wanted to believe that she was going to be okay but that wasn't going to happen.
"I need you to take care of both of them. They're going to need you more than ever. I trust you. Promise me?"
I nodded.
"I promise." I said as tears fell from my eyes.
I quickly backed away as they started working on her and I stepped out. Jackson quickly came rushing towards me.
"Oh thank the Lord you're okay." Jackson said as he took Harriet from me. He kissed her cheek as Harriet held on tight to him.
"Where's April?" He asked.
Dr. Webber and I looked at each other. For the first time ever, I didn't know how to talk to Jackson. Dr. Webber spoke up.
"Son, she's seriously hurt. They are trying everything to save her right now." He said to him. I could see Jackson's face go from somewhat relieved to anxious and angry.
"I need to be in there!" He yelled as he tried to push past us.
"No you can't Jackson you know that." Dr. Webber said as him and I tried to hold him back. DeLuca tried to take Harriet away from his arms.
"Don't touch me!" He yelled as he finally stopped trying.
He then paced around back and fourth as Harriet started to cry again.
"I'll talk to him." I said to both of them. I approached him.
"Jackson." I said to him.
His red tear filled eyes met mine.
My heart broke at the sight.
"I hate being out here when I could be in there trying to save her life too." He said.
I wrapped one of my arms around him and rubbed Harriet's back with the other. We sat down on an empty gourney near us. He cried into my shoulder as I held him.
"You have to be strong babe, for Harriet." my voice croaked.
Just then, Dr. Hunt and Dr. Bailey came out with tears in their eyes.
Jackson lifted his head from my shoulder as he turned to look at them.
Dr. Baiely walked to us.
Jackson saw her face and immediately started shaking his head no.
"No, please no." He said.
Dr. Bailey's lip quivered.
"I'm so sorry." She said as she held onto his arm. Jackson held onto Harriet tighter as he cried into her small shoulder. I ran my hand over my hair as I let all of this sink in. The doctors left us alone as they all went on to try to cope with their pain.
"Jack-" I started off to say but he cut me off.
"I need to be alone." He said. I took a deep breath, nodded, and stood up. But before I left I remebered Harriet still needed stitches.
"Harriet needs her cut stitched up." I said to him. He let go of their tight embrace as he looked at her head with glossy eyes. I extended my arms. Jackson was in no shape to do them. He nodded and handed Harriet to me.
"Dada." She said pointing to him as she was in my arms.
"I know baby. But we have to get your cut all stitched up." I sat her down next to Jackson.
I grabbed a suture kit from the cabinet next to us.
I grabbed some numbing ointment and rubbed it around and on the cut. I tried to entertain her for a couple of minutes as the ointment kicked in.
I opened the suture kit and started stitching her cut. Luckily she only needed 4.
"Alright pretty girl, we're all done." I said cutting the thread. Jackson took her into his arms again. I took my gloves off as I threw the kit out. I walked back to them.
I bent down to their level and set my hand on Jackson's cheek. His eyes closed tightly.
"I need you to know that I'm here for you and Harriet. I'm not going anywhere. I love you." I said as I caressed his cheek. He nodded as I stood back up . Before I could walk away, he grabbed my arm. I saw his face and he was about to break down...and it really hurt me to see him like this. He set Harriet down and I sat next to him. He dug his head deep into my neck as he cried hard. More tears fell from my eyes. I could feel his pain. But right now, all I could do was hold him tight. DeLuca approached us and saw that Harriet was falling asleep. He looked at me. I nodded and he took Harriet with him. Jackson sat back up.
"What am I supposed to tell Harriet?" He said putting his head in his hands.
"We'll figure that out, I promise." I said. His usual bright green eyes were dull and dark. He fell back into my arms as we sat there in silence until I finally spoke up.
"I think you need to say goodbye to her." I said to him.
We sat up and he nodded. I got up first as I held my hand out for him.
"C'mon." I whispered. He took it and held it tight as we walked into the room she was in. He gasped as he saw her lifeless body there. He let go of my hand as he walked closer to her. I watched him as he grabbed her hand.
"You weren't supposed to leave us yet." He said through tears. I bit my lip as I tried to hold my tears in.
"So you survive a C-section on Meredith's table but you don't overcome this?!" He said. I put my hand over my mouth and walked out. I decided I could not hear anymore without breaking down. I started to have trouble breathing as I stood up against the wall of the room. Ryan spotted me and immediately walked over.
"Okay Mel, breathe slowly." He said walking me over to the same gourney I was with Jackson and Harriet. He sat me down. He held me tight and it helped me relax a bit.
"Good." He whispered as I started to calm down. He let me go now that I was breathing normally.
"Are you okay?" He asked me. I shook my head no.
"April just died, and Jackson's a mess. I'm trying to stay strong for him but..seeing him like that just.." I couldn't finish.
"It's going to be okay. You guys will get through this." I nodded trying to convince myself. It has to be okay...I promised April. He was there for me, now it's my turn.*SORRY TO HIT YOU WITH SO MANY BOMBS*
