I spent the day following Jay around camp, and talking to some other boys. I was struggling to adjust to my imprisonment. My heart ached as if it were crying out for what little I loved, and my thoughts were driving me insane. All I could do was sit in silence, for no one could know I was struggling.
I was sat down by myself (Jay had left on patrol earlier), and I began to study the leather cuff around my arm. I dragged my hand across it before grasping it and pulling. It didn't budge. It was there for some reason that I was unaware of. I stared off into the forest for a few minutes, but then glanced to my right. I could see Pan watching me, but I wouldn't let him know that I knew.
I didn't realize how afraid I had grown. Just his presence scared me. I wondered if Hook was actually planning on getting me out of here, or if I had just been given some false hope. Carefully I shuffled on to the ground from the log I had been sitting on and was Indian style on the grass. Closing my eyes, I thought of Hook.
I saw his face. It was still and emotionless. The same as it was before. No sign that he was coming for me. No regret or sadness. When I opened my eyes, they were foggy and slightly teary. I was startled by Pan's voice.
"Time to go back in your cage," I heard him say unapologetically. Without speaking of making eye contact, I stood up and followed him. I felt broken. Defeated. Alone.
I was shoved back into the cramped cage and hung back in the tree. At least the view of the sunset was clear.______________________________________
In the cage for a few days, free for a day, food, back in cage. This was my routine for however long I'd been there. But one day, I was given and opportunity. "Pan has offered you free roam of the island, under a few conditions," Felix said as I crawled out of the cramped space, "you must tell him you are leaving camp, and you are not allowed on the beaches." We nodded, my head clouded with confusion. I wasn't complaining, just confused.
Without saying a word I walked into camp in search of Pan. "Looking for me?" I didn't have to look for long. "Yes actually, um, why exactly are you letting me do this?" "I figured it would make you less likely to try and escape." I nodded before biting at my nail. " Well I guess I'll be going then," I murmured as u turned to walk into the forest. Once I was out of sight, I began to run. A smile spread across my face. I touched every bush and tree I passed by and all my pain seemed to fade. By the time I reached I Cliff's edge, the sun was up in the sky.
My cheeks were wet with tears as I looked up into the sky. That's when I saw it. The Jolly Roger was still in the water and a row boat grew closer to the shore that I couldn't set foot on. It was Hook.
Slowly I strolled down to the edge of the forest, about a quarter of a mile from the beach. That's when I saw him.
I ran with all my strength towards him. He could see the smile on face and the tears rolling down my cheeks. When I made it to him he grabbed my waste and swung me around. After setting me down, I could see how much he had missed me.
"I thought you weren't coming back," I said as I tried to catch my breath. "Listen to me now, alright? I can't get you away from here just yet. But soon I will try. I swear on my life." I nodded, but still smiled. His face gave me energy to keep going. When he went to hug me, I winced at his touch. "What's wrong love?" He asked with concern. "I'm fine it's just a bruise." He nodded suspiciously, before turning to leave. "Just hold on a little longer darling." I nodded and wiped away my tears. Within a few minutes I saw his ship disappear into the fog.
My peace was short lived. I felt someone grip my hair and throw me to the ground. It was a group of lost boys. "Ha, look how weak she is," I heard him say. I looked up at him as I pushed the hair from my face. After getting on my feet, I began to back up, only to be pushed toward the one who had threw me before. Again I stepped back to get away, but he only grew closer until my back was against stone. His face was so close to mine I could feel his breath. I lifted my good hand to fight back, but he quickly pinned it down.
"Too slow, and too afraid." They all laughed. I tried to pull my hand away. He pulled a knife and put it against my throat. His face was next to my ear now. "Some of us are just not strong enough to fight," he spit into my ear, "while some of us are just to much of a coward." I flinched at his voice, and again laughter erupted. I could feel warm blood drip down my shirt as he lightly dragged the knife down the side of my face to make a shallow but long cut.A little too close to death...
