Half a heart

Chapter four

I woke up with my hands on my lips, not my scars.

He texted me to meet at the corner.

Our corner.

The place we had our first walk.

I met him there and he laced his fingers through mine.

He held my gaze as we stood there. At that moment I didn't care who saw. I had him, and he had me. And that's all that matters.

"Why?" I broke the silence.

"What?" He said pulling away.

"Why are you so determined to be with me?" I asked him, squeezing his hand.

"Because, I know that if I try hard enough, I can fix you. I can make you better. I can mend you back together. I can heal your scars." He kissed my cheek.

"Some people are just broken, Zach, I'm like a piece of glass. I can't be fixed."

"I can glue you back together." He smiled.

"But then are you certain I won't fall and break again."

"Yes, bailey, I'm certain." He said.

"And what if I do fall though? I'll just break again. What if I'm held high on a shelf and no one can catch me."

"Or, what if your in my arms, where no one can hurt you. Besides bailey, I'd live next to that shelf to make sure you don't fall. I'd do anything to protect you. So you never shatter to pieces again." He kissed me.

"Can we walk to school now." He held out a hand. I smiled and took it.

"Oh... My... Gosh... Ghost girl is dating goth boy! This is news!" Cecelia ran to Everyone near her.

"I got to get to my locker, don't break on me bailey." He smiled and let go. I was plunged into coldness. I felt exposed without him.

I rushed to my locker and barely made it. Cecelia was about to nag me when some guy came over to talk to her. Being the brat she was she just had to stop and talk.

"Hey." His voice startled me.

"Hi." I said. He grabbed my hand and we walked to math.

He again sat behind me. Like always.

I just wanted school to be over. All I could think about was our walk home. Getting lost in his eyes. Letting myself fall into his perfect arms.

I looked back at him after the bell rung. "Hey, let's walk after school. Kay?" He said. I nodded and kissed him.

"Hey ghost girl! I heard you were dating goth boy!" Cecelia called after me.

"What do you want, Cecelia?" I said.

"I want your boyfriend, he's extremely hot. Also, if you let me have him, I won't tease you as much, I could hook you up with," Her eyes searched the hall. "Someone." She smiled at me.

"No thanks, I'm perfectly happy." I walked away.

"Then I'll just have to try harder, it won't be hard to take him away from you, he doesn't know the truth about you yet." She smiled and walked away.

Don't cry. Don't cry. I wiped my eyes with my sleeve and hung my head.

Just three more periods and your done.

I made it through the day and met him at the flag pole.

"Hey, what's wrong?" He asked in my ear.

"It's Cecelia, now that she knows we're dating she, she wants to date you." I said.

"C'mon, you know the only girl in my life that I truly care about is you. I couldn't break your heart. Let's go take a walk." He said grabbing my hand and yanking me to him.

I smiled when his lips touched mine.

I walked next to him as we left school territory.

I kept thinking of how a girl like me, could find a guy like him.

I was so dark.

He was so perfect.

We walked around the town. Farther than I have ever been.

I didn't care where we went as long as he was by my side.

I didn't care if I got lost with him, nothing would change if we did. I already get lost looking at him.

"So... What about you? Like, I cut what, what do you, do?" I said.

He scratched the back of his head and put an arm around me. He smirked at my face as he looked down.

"My secrets are your secrets, bailey. We all have our problems. And your not the only one."

It took me a while to get that.

"You cut too?" I said.

He lowered his head and nodded.

I smiled.

"That's great." I said.

"What?" He had an angry look on his face.

"I have an addiction! You think that's great? You know the pain I'm going through!" I placed a finger over his mouth.

"What I meant to say was, that's great, now we no longer have to go through the same thing separately. We can finally heal each other." I stood up on my tiptoes and pecked him on his cheek. I whispered in his ear. "I love you Zach." I smiled at him as his fingers curled around mine.

"I'm sorry, I love you too." He smiled.

He showed me some of his scars. He drew "art" too.

He had an infinity sign on the base of his palm. I traced my fingers over his bumps.

He grabbed my hand.

"What?" I said.

"You forgot to show me this." He pointed to my half of a heart.

"Oh yeah, that's, that's nothing."

"Explain it." He searched my eyes for a story he knew I'd tell.

"It began after my mom and my dad began to fight. He took his anger out on me and so I began to cut. When my mom found out he was slapping my wrists and my face she kicked him out till he learned better.

"When he came back we were happy, my scars faded and I was back to normal. One night my dad started fighting with my mom again and I started going through anxiety. When my dad left us that's when I drew this. Half a heart, because I wasn't whole without a dad." I started to cry.

"No no don't cry." He grabbed my hands.

For a second I thought my scar was whole. No, that's impossible. He kissed my cheek. "Bailey look at your hand."

I opened my eyes and smiled at what I saw.

I wasn't thinking of a whole heart. There was a full heart, shared between two hands in a perfect fit.

"I have one two." He said pointing to his hand.

I smiled at the fact we both had half a heart, and together they made two. Out of the 7 billion people in the world he had the exact piece I was needing.

I smiled at the full heart we shared as we walked down the street. Both tracing our scars.
