Half a heart

Chapter 5

"I never knew... About your... Dad." He touched it like it was a sensitive topic.

"It's fine." I said.

We sat across my kitchen table. It was the first time he's been in my house. Anyone really.

I ducked my head choking back tears that weren't there. I wasn't faking the sadness. I really was sad.

I just can't cry anymore tears.

I was cried out.

But mostly, when I was with him, I couldn't cry.

I was in too much of a happy mood.

My mom walked into the front door.

"Oh hey!" She said. Zach blushed and stood up extending a hand.

"Hello Ms. Shale, I'm Zach, it's a pleasure to meet you." He smiled.

"I hope your taking care of my Bailey. She isn't perfect." She winked at me.

"I know, that's exactly how she's perfect." He smiled back at me.

"Are you staying for dinner?" My mom asked.

"I don't mind if you do."

"Are you sure? I don't mind leaving if you want me too." He said

"Oh no, any friend of Baileys is a friend of mine." She smiled and set down the grocery bags.

We helped out cleaning up the kitchen. Wow he was great at persuading my mom that he was a good person. My mom would like him.

At around 6ish my mom set the table for dinner and we sat down for my embarrassment.

She whispered in my ear, "does he know?" I nodded.

"So you know about Bailey?" She said.

He breathed in and nodded.

"Maybe you can cure her."

"Miss, I don't like the way you say cure, it's not a disease, it's just a very bad... Hmm.. Gift. God gives these things to us so we can overcome obstacles. You might think is a problem, or something she does to forget about something that has happened in her past, but it's more than that. It's just another obstacle she has to overcome in order to overcome her past."

I winced. My mom stared at him.

Here it comes, she's gonna kick him out.

But she didn't, she clapped.

My mother clapped.

"That was beautiful. Honey he's a keeper. I definitely approve of him. He stuck up for you! And now, I no how my baby feels."

I blushed at that.

When he left my mom gave him a hug and we walked out into the sidewalk.

"Thanks." I said.

"Anything for you." He said.

He leaned down and kissed me.

"My mom is going to adore you now." I said.

"Good, now I have two girls who love me." He smiled.

I laughed. "I should get inside, my mom probably wants to talk to me." I said.

"Okay. Don't break on me bailey." He said.

"Don't leave my shelf." I said walking away.

"What shelf, I thought I kept you in my arms." He held out his arms to show emphasis.
