Chapter Seventy-Six: Motherly Instincts

Sam whined, falling over in his sleep. He sniffled, starting to cry loudly. Not many people knew Sam was here, most of the soldiers were against it. Child or not. He started to cry louder, heart broken. Laurens groaned, waking him up. He opened his eyes, looking at Sam. Sam was still asleep, though. Laurens sat up, not sure what to do.

"U-Uh, hey, um, child, Sam... uh, d-don't cry??" he said nervously, he patted his head. Sam still cried. Laurens now pet him, scooting closer to him. Sam rolled over on his side, clinging to Laurens's leg. He didn't have very good motherly instincts. Sam woke up, too, sitting up.

"Don't leave meeee!!!" he cried out. Laurens actually felt his heart break, frowning.

"H-Hey, S-Sam, it's okay, please don't cry..." Sam looked over at Laurens's, a look of abandonment in his eyes.

"I-I want m-my mother..." Laurens couldn't think of what to do, he pulled him close to him, hugging him.

"I-I know, I know... I'm so sorry..."

"W-Why, I-I didn't do anything w-wrong!!" Sam cried. Laurens hugged him tighter, looking around for his turtle plush. He let go of him and grabbed it.

"The world is a cruel place, Sam..." he said gently and handed him the turtle plush. Sam hugged the plush, hugging it tightly and sobbed.

"Hey, it's going to be okay, I promise you... I'm so sorry, you're too young, Sam... too young to have this happen to you..." he said quietly, wiping the child's tears away. Sam continued to cry.

"....un... deux... trois... quatre... cinq... six... sept... huit... neuf..." Laurens sang quietly. Sam sniffled, looking at him.

"....un... deux... trois... quatre... cinq... six... sept... huit... neuf..." he continued.

".....un...deux..." Sam sang. Laurens smiled, Sam stopped crying.

"Sept huit neuf..."

"Sept huit neuf..."
