~Devina's POV~
"How could you Zane?" I screeched out as soon as I walked into his room.
"Devina I-" I stomped over to where he was and slapped him. Then I glanced at the other thing next to him and turned on my heel. "Sunshine wait-"
"No," I cut him off and shook my head. "Don't you dare try to explain yourself." He chuckled. Chuckled. Then walked over towards me. "You-you little yarn ball! Don't laugh! This is not funny!" He grinned and pecked my forehead.
"You wouldn't let me have any, Sunshine." I glanced behind him at the empty ice cream container and looked back at Zane.
"You're getting me more otherwise-" I grinned and shrugged. "I'll just move out." He froze and lurched forward, grabbing my arms.
"No. No, you can't do that to me. I support you in your decisions but not this. Please don't do this to me." I grinned back at him and caught his lips with mine.
"I'm not going anywhere." I finally said. He relaxed his grip on me and pulled my body into his chest.
"Don't do that again. Okay?" I nodded and giggled. He's too serious. "What do you want to do today?" He asked after a few moments, maybe to calm himself back down.
I just shrugged in response. It's been almost a month since the funeral and I haven't made any effort to make friends. Zane keeps telling me that I need to get back out there, but I disagree. Why put yourself out there just to be hurt again? Just to be knocked back down? It was also summer break so I don't have to worry about school anymore.
"Come on let's go shower." He finally spoke. I groaned and snuggled further into his chest.
"I don't wanna." He laughed and turned around so his back was facing towards me.
"Let's go." He hoisted me up on to his back and carried us to the bathroom. I tried to wiggle out of his arms but he refused to let me go until we got to the shower. He turned it on and slipped his shirt off. While he was doing that, I turned towards the mirror. There weren't any dark circles under my tired eyes which was a surprise. My skin was almost translucent, probably because the lack of sun I've been receiving lately. My blonde hair had gotten so long it was almost down to my waist. It was a tangled mess and I wouldn't be surprised if a bird came flying out of it. I tilted my head to the side and really analyzed my features. They weren't special. I had a big nose and small eyes. Compared to Zane, I was a one while he was a ten. I couldn't help myself but wonder how he's still here. I'm just ordinary. I looked behind my reflection and caught Zane's eyes on me in the mirror. His brows were knotted together, in confusion, maybe even frustration. I lifted my eyes off him and looked away. "Devina," He slowly called.
"Hmm?" I mumbled and turned towards him.
"Is that really what you think?" My heart nearly stopped as I flinched.
"What?" He looked me over and repeated his question. "I never said that." Out loud. I added in my mind.
"No. But I heard you. You accidentally mind linked me. You were thinking about me." His brows were still scrunched together.
"I-you weren't supposed to hear that." He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
"Don't ever think that. Okay? You are-" now it was my turn to close my eyes.
"Just stop. Please. Stop saying I'm beautiful and that I shouldn't think like that." Maybe for other people, this would raise their self-esteem but for me? It makes me feel small. Like I need someone to lift me up, to save me from drowning. Maybe I do need to be on higher ground, but I can swim by myself.
"No. I won't stop saying it until you get it into your mind." He tried to take a step forward but I moved away, towards the door.
"Don't waste your time," I whispered back making him flinch. "I showered last night," I added before walking out the door. I hurried downstairs but stopped dead in my tracks when I saw someone standing where out front door used to be with a smile plastered on her face.
"You must be Devina." She grinned and looked me over from head to toe. I looked behind my shoulder, half expecting Zane to come running downstairs but he never came. Something's not right. "Quite a beauty you are. I can see why he takes such an interest in you." The girl practically glided over to me and reached forward but I moved back away from her hands. "Ah, don't worry. Zane can't hear us." I wanted to ask why but she continued talking before I had the chance. "You don't know me?" I shook my head and she sucked in a deep breath. "That hurts." Then she shrugged and looked around.
"Who are you?" I finally asked and her eyes snapped back to mine, with a glimmer embedded deep within them. Almost like she's been waiting for this question. She stuck her hand out and spoke, with a nasty grin dancing on her red painted lips.
"I, my dear, am April."
