Jay retreated through the crowd of faces that were now blurred due to the new set of tears coming down my face. I couldn't tell if the tears were from happiness or just sheer embarrassment that these people had to see me like this. "Hey sweetheart," the voice was like music to my ears and I closed my eyes just to make sure I wasn't imagining the voice, but as a set of strong arms wrapped around me I knew it was real.
"Hi, Josh," I croaked out using my right arm to squeeze him tight as his hand smoothed over my hair while his other hand rubbed my back. He slowly sat back into the chair that Jay had left next to the bed. Josh held my hand rubbing soothing circles along my palm.
"Did you miss your big brother?" he asked as a tear rolled down his face. I bit my lip and nodded yes. He was silent for a few moments and I looked back to the door and the other 5 faces had gone away, probably giving us some time and privacy. "Sky, this, this whole situation, I feel terrible because I feel responsible..."
"How on earth would this be your fault? you live across the country." I said wondering why he would say something so absurd.
"But that's just it Sky, I may be your big brother but since Dad left I've been the only man, the only father figure to you. I left you alone with Mum, I should have been there for you. It shouldn't have to be this way, if I had just been here..." he chocked on the last words as a fresh stream of tears came down.
"Josh you have to know that there are a lot of what ifs. What if I had forgotten my shoe and we were behind a few minutes, what if I asked Mum to stop at Tim Hortons, what if someone else was driving. These all could have changed things, but it didn't. You never could have put your whole life on hold for me, I could never ask you to do that. You being away had nothing to do with any of this. You can't blame yourself." As hard as it was to say, I was right, I can't look on the what ifs, I have to accept what happened. Josh nodded his head signaling that he understood.
"I should go visit Mum, and let you do some visiting. That okay?" I said yes and gave Josh one last hug before he left to go and get the next visitor.

The door swung open again to reveal my sister Hope. "Sky!" she almost yelled coming to me and enveloping me into a tight hug. It wasn't until I winced in pain that she remembered my condition. "hehe, oops, sorry." she looked down sheepishly.
"nah, its fine." I gestured for her to sit on the bed. She pushed the blanket to one side and perched on the end of the bed.
"How's my little sister doing?" she asked trying to keep the mood light. That had always been Hope, she was everything I ever wanted to be. She was gorgeous, Curly blonde hair, bright green eyes, tall, slim, she was bubbly and fun and always made the best of any situation.
"Well I'm alive, so that's a plus," I said giving a forced laugh at the end. Hope and I talked for a while more about nothing in peticular which was nice. When she left she gave me another hug and a kiss on the forehead.
