Setting: Clark's and works.
Clark
Starless nights are better than darkness in open daylight.
~AnonamousWhatever Revina did, wasn't good at all.
She was, of course, my friend but hugging someone without looking, was something I hadn't expected from her.
My anger was overpowered by her sorry face so I thought best to keep my mouth shut. She stood there dumbfounded just like me. Jaden had just spoken but I couldn't internalize that he had just given his review of our store: bad.
"Umm.. sorry sir. You.... you may have a seat."
"I haven't come here to take a seat or interact with your clumsy staff. I have come for something which only your shop can provide me." Jaden said, crossing his arms along his broad chest.
I wondered, even if I tried I wouldn't get such a body.Without thinking I started to say the lines we usually say to our customers, "Sure sir, what can we provide you with? We have a large variety of....." he cut me off and sternly said, along with knocking down our Buddha statue,
"A coffin."What! A coffin. Oh no, he couldn't murder someone and ask for a coffin. We don't even make coffins. We stopped making them since he took over the city. We hadn't mentioned that on our signboard at least.
Revina stood there shivering. I could sense her fear and with a small gesture of my hand, I sent her back to the storeroom.
She walked in slowly, making every step towards the room with caution.I walked out from behind the cashier counter, took out our flyer and said, "Sir we don't make coffins. We make wooden artefacts and sculptures, not coffins."
He neither looked affected nor dejected. He was pretty adamant on his choice.
He settled his hands behind his back and walked towards me and looked me into the eye.
"Not my problem. I am your special customer and that's the least you can do for me, am I right?"
I put my head down so I wouldn't meet his eyes. I couldn't show that I was scared of him. After what felt like a day passed by, I said, "Sir, I will have to check with the sculpting artist. If he can, I will surely inform you, sir."
He backed off and started pacing in front of my desk."No excuses, it's your job now. I need the coffin by tomorrow 9, sharp. I am very precise on my words, if you don't do this I will make sure this shop of yours will close before you know it."
And with that, he turned towards the shop's door and left while slamming it too.I called for Revina. She had to at least help me after what an awful thing she did. She came out a little scared as if Jaden was still there and when she realized he wasn't, she came running towards me.
"Clark I am really sorry. I thought it was Mrs Jones, I am really sorry," she hesitated and then when I said nothing she asked, "By the way, what did he want ?"
I composed myself. She was quite annoying at times and it was hard to focus when she happened to do that.
I took a deep breath and looked towards her.
"Revina it's ok, but now you have to help this store. He threatened me that he would close this shop if we don't provide him with a coffin by tomorrow morning.""What are we gonna do?" she said. Her face was red. Her face was always red when she was emotional. It made her look innocent.
I had noticed that quite a few times. The feeling made butterflies flutter in my stomach. It was hard to understand the feeling but I knew I was into her.
She was the girl that stood out from the rest. She was the one who fought against her cruel father, tackled nightmares of her mother's death and still managed to make everyone happy around her.
I couldn't tell her that I liked her. She was already worked up to start another problem.
She was the only girl that I fell for without realising it.
Anyways, I was lost in thought when Revina snapped her fingers.
"Oh sorry. Yeah, I was saying that you have to go and ask Mathew ( our sculpting artist ) to make a coffin and he can take whatever price for it, but it should be done by morning, got it"
She nodded and immediately took off.
After the shop's bell rung indicating that Revina had left, I felt a little relaxed.
I wanted to know more about this Jaden Terri of our city and what's his actual motive in taking hold of so many crimes.
I flipped open my laptop.
I typed his name in the search box and came to the info on the front page.It said he was the person behind most of the crimes in the city and recently he looted a bank near our shop. He was one person the police couldn't take action against.
He made a criminal record which included the only robbery and hurting innocent ones. He didn't murder or kidnap.Well at least then we won't be in a murder case if we provide him with a coffin. Murder cases always led to death here.
The sound of the store's bells rung again which meant Revina was back.
She was huffing with exhaustion. She ran."Clark he ..... Huh ... Mathew said he would make it by today night as it involves Jaden. He will send the box early in the morning."
She panted. She held out her hand to say as if she was trying to catch her breath and telling me to wait. I took the chance and held her hand. I directed her to the couch and made her sit. I got a glass of water and patted her back.
She smiled and I smiled too. She then hugged me. Her skin felt good on mine, it brought that tingling sensation and I was sure at that moment I was blushing.
I smiled maybe the biggest smile I had given in a long time."Great job Revina. What could I... I mean what could this store do without you," I said pulling back.
"Well, that's why I am always ready Clark. You name it."
I hugged her again. I felt her body get tensed at first like she was shocked at my reaction but then she relaxed. She hugged me back.
"You're the best buddy in the world, Clark!"
"I know I am but now instead of getting emotional we should get back to work," I said, pulling back from our short hug again.
That's what we did the whole day, both of us not wanting the next morning to come.
Jaden was to arrive, you never know what shocking surprises he carried with him.
We had to see tomorrow morning for that.(authors note)
