As Jason watched the car disappear around the bend taking Lexi out of his life, he felt like he'd been punched in the stomach. Sinking down to his knees, his hands covered his eyes as the tears rolled down his face and a primal roar of pain came out of his mouth.
'Lex, don't go...' he whispered, feeling like his heart was going to break in two. 'What the fuck have I done?' he murmered, over and over to himself like a mantra. On reflection, he couldn't blame her for running out on him. He realised he'd had no right to talk about her like he had, without any hard evidence and wished that he'd spoken to her about his suspicions, rather than blabbing it out over the dinner table.
He didn't know how long he'd been out there in the cold, the sky slowly turning a dirty, grey colour as she sun set and dusk started to set in. Jumping, he felt a soft hand on his shoulder and looked up to see his mum standing looking down at him.
'What are you doing out here Jason?'
'She's gone...'
'I figured as much luv. We thought you'd gone charging after her in the car, but then I passed by the front window and saw Lexi's car still in the drive-way there.' She nodded towards the Beetle sitting on the gravel, her hand absent-mindedly stroking his hair like she had when he was a small boy. 'I realised you must have been out here on your own all this time.'
'What am I going to do Ma? I love her and now I've fucked everything up!' he noticed his mum wince as he swore, and felt ashamed at using language that he knew she hated.
'I know you love her son. So, go and sort it out before it's too late,' she helped him up slowly, until he was standing there shivering next to her, as he suddenly realised how cold it now was. Pulling him into her arms, she cuddled him to her as he buried his head in the curve of her neck and sobbed noisy sobs. She let him cry for a few minutes and then took a step backwards so she could look him in the eye. 'You were totally out of order Jason. Lexi didn't deserve to be talked about like you talked about her, and quite frankly you've got some serious grovelling to do.'
'I know,' he wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and rifled through his jeans as he tried to locate the car keys.
'Do you love her Jason? I mean really love her?'
'Yes mum. I love her more than I ever thought it was possible to love someone. She's stolen my heart, something no other woman has ever done and I can't let her go,' he tapped his chest as he tried to indicate to Pat how he felt about Lexi. 'She's here mum and when I'm not with her she's in my head too.
'So, go and tell her that, before it's too late,' she kissed him on the cheek, her fingers stroking his face as she pulled away. 'But don't forget your coat or you'll catch your death. She opened the front door and retrieved his coat from the banisters, handing it to him. 'Don't worry, I'll smooth it out with Freya and Josh and just say it was a misunderstanding,' she sincerely hoped he would do as she'd told him. It was the first time she'd ever seen him cry over a woman and her heart contracted with love for him at the pain he must be going through.
'Thanks mum and I'm sorry I messed up your day,' he took his coat from Pat's outstretched hand and hurried over to Lexi's car, hoping to catch up with her at the flat before she left.
As he began to back the Beetle out of the drive-way, Steve's car drew up alongside. Seeing Jason switching on the car lights and start to back out he jumped out of the car and banged on the window, indicating with his hand that Jason wind the window down.
'Is she ok dad?'
'Yeah, no thanks to you son. Do you want to fuck up the one good thing you've ever had?'
