When Lexi awoke the following morning the bed was empty. She could hear Jason in the kitchen opening and shutting the fridge door as he pottered about. She slid out of bed and pulled a t-shirt on over her head, ignoring the swimmy feeling in her head to see what he was doing.
'Hi gorgeous,' he said, smiling a beaming smile at her as she walked in the room.
'Hi. What are you up to?' she walked over to him, stood behind him and wound her arms around his waist, her head resting on his shoulder blade as she cuddled up to him.
'Well, I was getting you breakfast in bed, but you've beaten me to it by appearing in here,' he said, holding his hands up in surrender. 'I was making you scrambled eggs on toast.'
'Sorry, I couldn't sleep in. I felt too hungry.' she flicked the kettle on, dropping a tea bag in each of the two mugs sitting beside it which Jason had got out of the cupboard.
'Good job I was making breakfast for you then.' Jason replied, breaking the eggs into the pan as the butter and milk sizzled together.
Lexi swallowed deeply as she tried to quell the wave of nausea which suddenly washed over her at the smell of the eggs cooking. She dropped the tea-spoon with a clatter onto the work-top and ran hell for leather into the bathroom, just making it in time to the toilet. She retched over and over as her empty stomach refused to give up anything to ease her nausea.
Jason's head snapped around from the hob where he was stirring the eggs, his face bore a look of surprise at her rapid exit. He switched the hob off, moved the pan off the heat and padded out of the kitchen. He found Lexi crouched over the toilet, her body shaking as the dry retching continued. He knelt down beside her, pulling her hair away from her face where it stuck damply to her cheeks and gently rubbed her back. If he could have swapped places with her at that moment he would have done. He'd assumed she was over the morning sickness and was dismayed to see it had re-emerged.
After a few minutes Lexi sat back shakily and gave Jason a watery smile. 'I guess I got out of bed too quick. I should have lay still for a few minutes and eaten a couple of biscuits before I got up.'
'Are you feeling better now?' Jason put his arm around her, concern etched across his face.
'A bit. I was doing so well too. I haven't had any morning sickness for a few days now and now I feel like I'm back to square one!' she started to cry, her shoulders heaving as she buried her head in his neck.
'Lex, it might just be a minor blip because you got up so quickly,' Jason soothed, his fingers gently stroking the back of her neck. 'Do you think you can stand up now?' he asked, handing her a tissue to wipe her eyes.
Lexi nodded and aided by Jason stood up shakily. 'I've ruined breakfast,' she said, looking apologetically at him.
'No worries, it's just one of those things. How about we take it easy today and see how you feel?' he led her into the bedroom, sitting her down on the bed and kissed her on the forehead, smoothing her hair away from her face as he did so.
Lexi gave him a wan smile. 'Ok. Give me a few minutes. I'll have a shower and hopefully I'll feel a bit more human afterwards.'
They spent the next few days relaxing. Jason was determined that Lexi would get plenty of rest and made sure she had a nap every afternoon. Some days he joined her in having a nap and some days he sat reading on the patio whilst she slept.
On the days where she woke up feeling sick they took it easy, sunbathing on the patio or going for short walks and on the days where she woke up feeling well they would go out and explore the tiny island. One day they cycled from one end of the island to the other, on another they went horse-riding along the beach. Each idyllic day ran into the next as they slipped into the lazy, island life.
