CHAPTER 123

Lexi and Jason made it to the hospital by the skin of their teeth. They had just enough time to park up and then rush to the maternity unit hand in hand, arriving at the ultra-sound department at dead on 10am.

Lexi gave the receptionist her name and confirmed her address and date of birth. 'Do you have a full bladder?' she asked Lexi, shuffling through the papers in her file to put them in the correct order.

'Yes.' Lexi replied obediently. 'Is the clinic running on time?' she was really hoping that it was, as she was dying to go to the toilet.

'Pretty much...' the receptionist replied, putting Lexi's file on the top of the basket sitting on the side of the desk. 'If you take a seat they'll call you when they're ready.'

'Good.' Lexi smiled and scanned the room for a spare seat, eventually spying two at the far end of the room. 'Thank God for that, she whispered to Jason as they made their way across the room. 'My bladder's fit to burst here. This is torture y'know. It was hard enough downing the amount they asked me to drink, what with my morning sickness and now I have to sit here feeling like I'm going to explode. I just hope to God I don't sneeze, or it could be very messy in here,she murmered, sitting down on the seat and crossing her legs.

'I'm just going to get a cup of water. Want one?' Jason asked, an evil grin crossing his face as he made to head off in the direction of the water machine.

'Ha ha, very funny.' Lexi shot back, sticking her tongue out and picking up a parenting magazine.

'Do you reckon they've installed that water machine in case you women get so desperate you have to go for a pee, because then you'd have to start drinking water all over again?' Jason sniggered, sitting back down next to Lexi and taking a sip of his water.

'You could be right there,' Lexi conceded with a rueful smiling, rubbing her belly which was sore because of her full bladder.

A couple of minutes later a sonographer came out of one of the half a dozen ultra-sound suites and called out her name, her eyes scanning the room until she caught sight of Lexi and Jason getting up out of their seats. As they made their way across the room, Jason studiously ignored the stares and women digging their partners in the ribs as they realised who he was. This was the part of his job he hated, the part where he just wanted a normal life with no-one staring or gossiping about him.

'I suppose I'll be... what is it they call it? Trending? Whatever it's called my name will be all over Twitter by this evening,' he murmered to Lexi, taking hold of her hand in his as they reached the nurse who was holding Lexi's file in her hand. 'I bet Gaz will soon let me know if he sees a mention of me being here with you.'

'Morning!' the sonographer said cheerfully. 'You're creating a stir in here,' she raised her eyebrow at the women, their bumps of varying sizes. She laughed as she saw that all the women who had been openly staring had all now swiftly looked down at their magazines, pretending that they hadn't noticed him at all.

'Hmm... I guess.' Jason replied grumpily. 'Nothing's private these days, not even a hospital visit.'

'Don't worry, the press won't get anything from us. Patient confidentiality and all that,' she said, smiling at them both and tapping her nose secretively. 'Mum's the word. Are you ready?' when they both nodded, she opened the door and led them into the darkened room.

As Lexi's eyes adjusted to the dim light, the sonographer instructed Jason to sit on the chair next to the bed and for Lexi to lay on the bed. 'If you can push up your top to uncover your tummy and push your underwear down to your hips, that would be great.'

Lexi did as she was told, her hands shaking slightly with nerves. Once she was done, the nurse squeezed the freezing cold jelly onto her stomach, making Lexi wince. She glanced nervously up at Jason who looked steadily at her, a nervous smile playing across his lips as he took her hand in his and clasped it tightly to his chest.
