Chapter Ten

Carson

Everybody is asleep except me and James. I can't sleep, how can you sleep when you hear everyone's heartbreaking stories and how we've all seen each other but never knew?! It's impossible! I don't know how the others can sleep without thinking about this.
"Why are you still up?" James asked pulling me out of my thoughts.
"Can't sleep. I just can't because of everything I've heard and what happened to you guys.... I just can't." I say then sigh.
"I know what you mean, that's why I took first watch. After hearing everything that everyone went through just... Just breaks my heart." James replied.
"Yeah I know how you feel." A couple minutes later I hear a twig snap, I jerk around only to see Nate.
"Dammit Nate. Don't do that." I whisper yelled. "James fell a sleep like fifteen minutes ago so I took the next shift." I continue.
"Sorry." He says quietly. After five minutes of silence I start to doze off and eventually I fall asleep on his shoulder. I feel Nate picking me up and setting me down on his sleeping bag.

Nate

As me and Carson are sitting in silence I feel her head on my shoulder. I look down to see her asleep. I then carefully pick her up and set her in my sleeping bag. Soon I hear a scream which was coming from the direction where James is. I panic and run towards him with my knife. I stab the zombie and help James over to the camp area.
"Bye James you okay?" I ask my voice shaking with worry. He shakes his head and says, "No. I've been bitten. N-nate you know what happens after you- you've been bitten. You ha-have to k-kill me." He says.
"No! I'm not going to kill you!" I yell.
"Then I'll do it myself!" He picks up his and shoots himself in the head. I stand there, frozen, shocked, my limbs going weak and soon I fall to my knees and silently cry. I hear the others running towards us.
"What happened?!" Riley asked me. He then looked to see James with the bullet in his head.
"No. No no no no no. NO!!!!" he says over and over again. Laney come over and wraps her arms around him. He then crys in her shirt. While Carson just stands there with her fists clenched tight, her jaw shut, with tears rolling down her face. Soon she runs. She runs away from this. I get up and go after her.
"Carson!! Carson stop! Stop Carson please." I call out.
She stops and turns to me only to say, "Why!? Why should I stop!? So I can watch you all eventually get bitten!? I can't. I can't do it. I watched my own parents get bitten then have to kill them, I had to walk into my best friend and my boyfriend dead!! I can't do it Nate! I just fucking can't."
"Then I'll help you. I'll be there when you need me. I'll protect you best I can. I will die trying to protect you!" I say back.
"No. You won't because I'm leaving. I can't watch you all die and have to shoot you afterwards. I can't do it."
"But we need you here.... I need you here. Please carson don't leave." I plead.
"I'm sorry." And with that she walks away but this time I don't go after her. I stand there for a few minutes before walking to the others.
"Where is Carson?" Laney asked with her voice shaking.
"She left. She doesn't want to see us get bitten and then shoot us. So she left and this time.... This time I didn't go after her." After I said that I started packing my stuff.
"We need to go." I tell them.
"We can't just leave James out here." Riley said standing up. So we burried him. We burried him in my he meadow where it was beautiful and calm and peaceful.
"At least he's happy now." Laney said sadly. Me and Riley nodded.
"C'mon we need to keep moving." Riley spoke up.
"Riley is right. C'mon."
We walked away from the meadie and started walking through the woods. Safteu was our second priority our first on was to fond Carson.
