My heart's beating a million miles a minute, but I have to stay calm. I have to get to the kids and make sure they're safe and I have to call the ambulance to make sure Harry's okay before it's too late.
I grab a knife from the kitchen drawer, slipping off my socks so that I limit my chances of tripping and falling. There's no evidence of a forced entry except that the front door is slightly ajar. There're no busted or opened windows, no dirt footprints or anything that could be noticed by a quick scan-over. After the police get here, they'll be able to examine things more carefully. Quietly, I walk up the stairs, listening intently for the slightest bit of noise, but hearing nothing.
Once I get to the kids' room, I place my ear to the door before cautiously walking inside. As soon as I do, I spot a dark shadow right next to one of the kids' beds. I turn on the light and standing before me, clear as day, is James holding Nicholas. I whip out my knife, but he's quick to take out a gun, not even making eye contact with me. I'm shaking tremendously, but my only thoughts are of getting my family safe.
"What are you-"
"Shh," he says. "You'll wake my son up."
"What the hell are you talking about?" I question and he finally looks up, eyes meeting mine. The same eyes that have haunted my dreams for so many nights.
"Let's go back in time for a moment, shall we?" he laughs. "But first, put down the knife. Or a bullet goes through sweet Nick's head." he threatens and I know he's serious. James doesn't play around. I slowly place the knife on the ground in front of me. "Now kick it away." he instructs.
"Not until you take the gun away from my baby's head." I say through gritted teeth and he laughs once more, a low, menacing sound.
"Oh Allison," he says with longing in his voice. "You're just like I remember you. So in charge of everything. I wish I vouldve
"Gun. Down. Now." I say slowly and he does as I say, kicking it away from him.
"Now you." he says and I unwillingly kick my only means of defense to the side.
"What the hell are you doing here, James?" I demand and he smirks.
"Like I said, let's take a trip to the past. I know you have to remember what I did to you years ago. You remember that, don't you?" he asks but I stay silent. "Well, long story short after I kidnapped you...well," he chuckles. "I very much enjoyed the pleasure of your body, Allison." he says and I shudder violently, almost vomiting at the thought of James doing what he pleased with my unconscious body.
"You have beautiful skin." he whispers. "So soft, I was afraid I might break you. But, after the way I fucked you...I was proven wrong. Your body can withstand a lot more than I thought. You proved me wrong, as you've done so many other times, baby."
"Don't call me that." I spit at him.
"I can't even begin to imagine why that idiot husband of yours threw it all away. Excuse me, ex-husband." he corrects himself.
"Why are you doing all of this?" I'm on the verge of tears now.
"Like I've said, my dear, naïve Allison," he pauses to put Nicholas back in his crib. He kisses his forehead and Nicholas stirs a bit but I pray to God that he doesn't wake up. I have to control my need to jump over and push James away from my son, but I somehow manage to keep my feet planted to the ground.
"I was supposed to be your husband, the father of our children. Instead, you chose him. And look where that's got you." he sneers. "We could've been happy together. Living in a big house somewhere with our children playing in the backyard as we watch them on our porch. How I envisioned our life together was perfect. But you threw it all away. That inconsiderate asshole of an ex-husband left you... time after time after time and you still chose to come back to him." he's getting upset now, his eyes growing wild and nostrils flaring.
