Days passed and weeks too and Mel skipped math again but the woman in red was nowhere to be seen. Maybe she had just imagined it, fallen asleep on the bench and dreamt the whole thing. Whichever way it was Mel could not let it go. She found her average world suddenly dull and boring, almost completely colorless compared to that day with the budding green and the fiery red of that dress. The dress had been absolutely mesmerizingly beautiful and only a really interesting person would ever wear such a garment for reading in the rain. Mel had discovered a deep desire to be that kind of interesting person, but how did you become like her, like the woman in red. Did you just buy a fancy dress and then go out and be interesting? Mel could not ever imagine that a dress could make her the least bit interesting. It was depressing really.
Ellie, Mel’s best friend was trying to get her attention, she wanted to go to the beach after school and get a tan. Normally Mel would go, if just for lack of something better to do but today she just could not focus on anything Ellie was saying.
“I need to study” Where did that come from? Mel needed to do no such thing but she wanted to stay at school and wander the park. But since when did she lie to Ellie? “Actually I just don’t feel like going to the beach, tomorrow maybe?”
Ellie looked long at Mel “It’s okay but are you okay? You have been so strange lately. Ever since you told me about that red woman or what it was”
“Woman in red” Mel corrected. “Yeah I am okay, I just want to spend some time alone. School is nearly at an end and it feels a bit unreal that it’s all over”
“I would not say that. But for the summer at least” Ellie gave Mel a quick hug and wandered off.
Mel stood where she stood, at the foot of the stairs to the schools entrance. She had a feeling in her gut that she couldn’t place at first but then she knew it was dread. School was over in a couple of weeks and after that life began. Well a lot of people would continue going to school and educate themselves but Mel had no Idea what she wanted to be or who she wanted to be more like it. Who the hell am I? Walking around aimlessly in the park she tried to remember. Mel, average Mel who was content with what she had, who was probably going to be an accountant like her father or at the very least an accountants assistant, like her mother. But she just was not that Mel anymore. Her thoughts were interrupted by a streak of red at the corner of her eye. She turned so fast she nearly fell but there was nothing there. No, wait there was something. On the bench, on the exact spot where she had sat that day lay a large leather-clad book.
