When Mel went to the antique store the following morning she was met by a box wrapped with green ribbons and a smiling Ruby who seemed to have trouble standing still. “I thought you would like this Mel. I was not sure but I thought you would. I am sorry I disappeared on you, didn’t mean to. You can work it off. Here open it, put it on”

Mel was so glad to see Ruby again that at first she did not really understand what she was saying. Then when she understood she felt so happy she hugged both the box and Ruby, something that surprised them both, but Ruby only seemed happily surprised so Mel did not feel that ashamed for having thrown herself at the woman “So you have talked to the owner then?”

“I am the owner so I guess you could say that, I talk to myself all the time”

“You own this place?”

“Since a few months Yeah! Is it not fabulous!? Or well it can be. I want to make this into a magical place”

“If anyone can it’s you” Mel thought for a second. “Will you help me put the dress on? And I can tell you about the four poster bed I’ve been renovating and about the plans I have for my bedroom. Do you really own this place?” Mel found that the way Ruby talked was contagious and giggled.

Ruby giggled to “Yes I do and tell me all about it”

She helped Mel into the dress while listening to the plans of purple wall paper and drapes and put Mel’s hair up on her head and then suddenly disappeared into a back room. Mel wandered around getting used to her new dress and when Ruby came back with a pair of lady’s boots in black leather with laces, an old umbrella and a black biker jacket much like the one Ruby herself had worn that first day she put them on without protest. It was all very exciting.

“You know” Ruby said. “I think you should mix up the purple in your room with the same green color as the dress. And I think we should have us some hot chocolate”

Mel considered her suggestion and found it to be rather great actually. When they sat down to drink the chocolate she was back in her old clothes and her new ones were packed away, ready to be taken home. She listened as Ruby talked about what she wanted to do to the store and drank more chocolate than she probably should have. When it was time for her to go she did not want to but at the  same time she was eager to go shopping for wallpaper and paint with her mother in the afternoon.  “So when should I work here?”

“Whenever you like”

“Three afternoons a week and Saturdays, if you’re here” She said boldly

“I will be here” Ruby took Mel’s hand and like she had before kissed it . Then she glided away over the floor in her high heeled boots and her remarkable red silk dress. “Don’t forget to wear it” She called after Mel. “You look great in green, brings out the color in your eyes and hair”
