They sat in a corner of the shop. Ruby had made hot chocolate, from the recipe in the book, instead of tea but Mel was not complaining. Ruby had taken of her apron and placed her unusually graceful feet on the table. Mel tried to take it all in. “So you knew me when I was little?”
“Yeah, I guess you could say that but it’s not important now. What’s important is getting to know you now. If you want to be friends that is?”
Friends with the woman in red. Was she kidding? “Yes, I would like to be friends with you”
“Groovy” Ruby smiled and took Mel’s hand to shake it very sincerely. Then she squeezed her eyes together for a second and taking Mel’s hand in a new grip she kissed her knuckles. “Nice to have made you acquaintance”
“Ahh, yes….” Mel felt overwhelmed by a strange warm feeling in her gut as well as a bit taken aback by Ruby’s actions. “You are very strange…. But I like it”
“I am glad that you do. Not all people are equally friendly to us abnormally weird people”
“Ruby, do you want the book back?”
“Maybe later. You need it for now and Mel I really need to go now. I would have loved to have stayed but I have a dinner with my name on it waiting. See you around?”
And just like that Mel found herself out on the street again, on her way home. Confused and happy in a giddy sort of way. She wondered how much rum there had been in the hot chocolate and what had actually happened ? It was not so easy to know with Ruby, she was this beautiful, strange creature who seemed to think ball gowns were casual wear ant that giving away old books written by relatives were everyday events. Mel had a distinct feeling that nothing would ever be the same again. And how could it be, how could anyone’s life be the same after having met someone like Ruby. Ruby Red.
