Ruby was waiting for Mel, sitting across her scooter and reading, when she saw Mel she just stood up and caught her in one big warm hug.

“What’s the matter Amelia” Ruby held on to her and rubbed her back.

“I don’t know. Or I mean…. My best friend Ellie is telling people I only want attention, that I look like a clown. She hurt me I guess” Mel was so glad that Ruby was there holding on to her.

“So speaks she of the green eyes. I mean she is jealous of you and what may I ask is wrong with attention! As long as it is the kind of attention you want and besides people who stand out will always get the attention of others and be an inspiration to them. Don’t mind her, if she can’t understand now then maybe with time she will or maybe you will just have to let her go”

“But she is my best friend”

“Not all best friends stay best friends forever. But luckily new best friends come along every now and then. Trust me, I know”

“I want to go home Ruby, I am tired. I am glad you are here to pick me up. You understand things”

“I was you once Mel, or very similar to you”

“I can’t ever imagine”

Ruby just smiled, helped Mel onto the scoter and drove them off towards Mel’s home. Mel held on to Ruby, her face against Ruby’s back and almost fell asleep. She felt so safe and home with Ruby even though she had just met her. Not like with Ellie who felt more and more like a stranger. Arriving at her house Mel stepped of the bike and thanked Ruby for the ride and was just about to turn when Ruby laid a hand on her arm.

“May I have the pleasure of your hand fair Amelia?” Ruby got off the scoter to stand beside it. “I wish to bid you a good night” She winked.

Mel smiled let Ruby take her hand and hold it and kiss it like she had done twice before. She even blushed a little

“You should have been followed home by at least a dozen boys” Ruby kept holding Mel’s hand.

“I am not that interested in boys” Not like you interest me Mel thought.

“Well lucky me then to get to drive you home. And Mel, don’t let that thing with your best friend get you down. If she can’t understand she can’t, you will find those that do”

“Like you” Mel said and was just about to ask if Ruby wanted to come in for some tea so they could talk longer, spend more time together, when the front door opened.
