Mel spent a day trying to paint on the canvas in the garage which was fun but damn difficult and finishing her new room. She thought much of Ruby and much of her mom and nearly jumped out of her skin when her father came into her room and said her name. He seemed concerned with something and after having sat down on a chair by the wall he told her. He had seen when Ruby drove her and her presents home yesterday and he thought Mel was being inconsiderate towards her mother for seeing Ruby when it was against her mother’s wishes. Mel had to swallow down the “you don’t understand” stuff and try to explain things as simply and calmly as she could.
“I am sad that mom feels the way she does about Ruby and I do respect that she does and I have no intention of forcing her to have anything to do with Ruby but I will be spending time with her because she is my friend and I like her a lot. I would be very sad and unhappy if I could not see her. I am sorry for what happened all those years ago but I can’t let it dictate how I live my life now. I know I am only sixteen and all but short of locking me inside the house for two years you can’t really stop me from seeing who I want”
“I see” John looked almost amused. “My dear daughter it seems I must have looked away for a minute or so and missed when you grew up. You are no longer a little girl, you are a young woman and you are right I can’t stop you from seeing who you want but you do understand it can become difficult if your mom learns your still spending time with Ruby?”
“Dad, I work for Ruby I will be seeing a lot of her. Maybe I should just tell mom that she and I see things differently and that as I respect how she feels she should respect how I feel?”
“Oh Mel” John sighed. “She won’t like it. You do understand why she is worried about you seeing Ruby? I myself don’t think it works that way but I have never been able to convince her otherwise”
“Yeah, I get how she thinks and I don’t agree with it either. Besides it’s already too late I think I loved Ruby from the moment I saw her. I was not planning on telling mom anytime soon but eventually she would have to know right? And I don’t think it happened because of Ruby it happened because that’s who I am”
“Mel, Mel, Mel.” John smiled and put his arms around his daughter. “You know, I kind of always thought it would end with one or both of our children being gay or bi or something, just to show your mom how wrong she is. But you are right, you should not, nor will I, tell her yet. Let’s give it some time and I will prepare her, talk to her. Not of you but of the issue in general. I love you Mel and all I want for you is to be happy. And to tell you the truth I always liked Ruby.”
Mel could first not believe what he said, he had been so angry that first time when he and her mom had told Ruby to leave and for Mel to stop seeing her. This proved parents could change their minds about things and be reasonable, there was hope. She hugged her dad back and thanked him for his understanding and support. Everything would be easier with him on her side.
