Ruby was not in the store when Mel came to talk to her, it was the old lady again, but she had left a note.

I am so sorry about graduation night Amelia mine. Had I known your mother still held such a grudge after so long I would have gone about things differently. I can understand if you don’t want to see me now but if you do I will be at the store tonight. Hope you will come

Mel could not understand how Ruby would think she would not want to see her, it was her parents that had been rude, Ruby had never been anything but kind. Weird, yes. But kind. She spent part of the day painting in her room and part of it sulking about the house. When she left in the evening she wore the dress and the jacket and hurried out before anyone could start protesting about her choice of clothes on a regular evening. She wanted more dresses like this. More green in her wardrobe.

When she arrived at the store there seemed to be a veritable party going on and at first she hesitated but then, holding on to Ruby’s note in her jacket pocket she stepped up to the door and through it.

The first thing she saw were the candles, there were candles everywhere. And the second thing that caught her eyes was the man, a tall, dark man in a gorgeous, sapphire blue, silk suit that was lighting them. Then ruby came running.

“You came Amelia mine, you came!” Happy and perhaps a little tipsy she caught Amelia in a hug and turned round, round with her. “I was not sure you would come” She put Mel down and kissed her hand.

“Of course I came, why would I not? It was my parents that were rude to you Ruby, not the other way around” Mel looked around at the store and marveled at how wonderful and magical it looked in only candlelight, at how magical and beautiful  Ruby looked in her simple but wonderful red, silk dress. “I wanted to see you. I wanted to know what it was all about but it seems it has to wait. You are having a party?”

“Yes, I suppose it is a party. Did they not tell you why they told me to go away?”

“No, they would not say a word”

“We will talk about it Amelia, I promise but not tonight, tonight I want us to have fun. Come meet my friends”

Ruby introduced Mel to the man in blue. His name was Eric Azul and he was maybe the most beautiful man Mel had ever seen. He like Ruby kissed Mel’s hand and said it was nice to meet her with a smoky voice that had an accent, maybe Spanish. Then she was introduced to a woman with hair so pale it was almost white, she wore a dress of grey silk that sparkled with rainbows of color in the candlelight. Her name was Ash Grey and she bowed to Mel and said with a voice so deep it was startling that it was a pleasure to meet her. And then there was the plump woman in amethyst purple velvet and what Mel was rather certain were real diamonds. Her hair was so long its dark, shiny, brown tresses almost reached the floor. She smiled at Mel and then hugged her saying, finely I get to meet you I have heard so much about you. It was all rather strange but also precisely what you would expect of Ruby. Her friends were absolute gems, both in color and in kindness it turned out and soon Mel felt quite at home with them. Eating homemade fudge and drinking the ever present hot chocolate with rum. This was how you should live and oh was she glad her parents could not see her now.
