Even the following day Mel had trouble understanding what had really happened the night before. Her parents had come outside and Ruby had greeted them by name. They had told her to leave, to go away and never come back, to leave their daughter alone and not bother her. Ruby had known them, Mel was sure, known more than just their names. And her parents hand known Ruby, known her and really not been kind to her. Why, was her greatest question? One which she had asked last night as her father had grabbed for her and pulled her inside, as her mother had told Ruby one last time to leave, why? Why did they dislike Ruby so? They had only told Mel to go to bed, wash of that stuff on her face and go to bed. Ruby is no concern of yours they had said. We are your parents and you can trust us and you should obey us. Go to bed and forget about that woman.

But how could anyone ever forget Ruby? Mel was angry with her parents and confused at their silence. The least they could do was tell her why they did not want her to see Ruby but they did not. Instead they attempted to distract her by papering the walls of her room and talking about summer activities they wanted to take their children to. Things Mel wanted to do so she could not very well accuse them of being mean and uncaring.

That evening she sat with Rubinas book in her lap but could not concentrate on reading, thoughts of last night running around in her head. Somehow she would find out what was going on. And she would start by asking Ruby. Her parents did not know it was Ruby she worked for and she had no intention of telling them. In fact Mel had come to realize there were a lot of thinks she felt uncomfortable talking to her parents about. And she could no longer talk to Ellie. She could not even talk to Ruby about all things, especially things that were about Ruby herself. Mel had never been much interested in the opposite sex, and not much interested in her own sex either but with Ruby it was different. With Ruby everything was different. And Mel missed her.
