Mel came home from her shopping tour with her mother, having bought amethyst purple wallpaper that had darker medallions with gold in them and equally purple paint for the walls that could not easily be wallpapered, with white as snow paint for her ceiling and the door and window frames. It had turned out to be rather expensive so she had agreed with her mother that her parents would pay half of it and she the other half as she could. She had told her mother about her new job and she had been very happy about it even buying Mel an extra fancy lunch to celebrate.
Now Mel sat in the middle of her emptied out room surrounded by rolls of wallpaper and cans of paint. She had her computer in her lap and Googled pictures of green and purple together and of rooms that could give her inspiration. She felt happy, felt like she was finally discovering little by little who she really was. Not average Mel anymore, no now she had a fabulous green dress, an awesome four poster bed, a biker jacket and purple wallpaper. And she had Ruby. Ruby who had turned everything upside down, only in a good way. Mel was rather certain now she would have come to a crossroads in her life sooner or later anyway, she was just rather happy it had happened like this.
Suddenly she wanted to tell Ellie all about it and called her only for Ellie to tell her she was mad. That growing up was not what Mel was doing at all. Growing up was getting a serious volunteer position at the local hospital, growing up was planning for your future career and applying to schools to attend in the fall. Mel tried to make Ellie see it did not have to be that serious or that boring. But Ellie would not listen and said Mel should really think things through before she threw her life away. Then she hung up. This made Mel question what she was doing. With her purple wallpaper and her four poster bed. She wandered through the house like a lost soul and just couldn’t make sense of it all. Then her eyes fell on the book that Ruby had given her and she decided to seek guidance in the chapter where Rubina had had her own doubts.
Armed with hot chocolate, no rum this time though since her parents were home, and a cozy old flannel pajama she went to bed to read. Rubina had lots to say on the subject of doubt when it came to choosing between a safe average life and a fabulous life free of conventions and other people’s expectations. She said among other things.
Don’t let the fear of failing be what hampers your
progress. Follow your heart and your dreams,
not everything has to be logical even though I
usually find it completely logical to follow
your heart. Others, friends and family, may not
understand your efforts and if nothing sways them
to your way of thinking then maybe you
should lovingly let go of them go, wish
them good luck and seek understanding
and support elsewhere. It can be hard to
make this shift in life but also equally necessary
if you feel suffocated by the cage which society
has built for you. Open the cage doors and try
your wings. You will falter at first but once you have
learned how to fly you will never forget it.
Wise words Mel thought, and scary. But she kind of knew by now she would never be an accountant.
