Mel worked on her room like mad all Sunday, her mother and father helping , even her little brother and it turned out her dad was actually quite good at the whole wallpaper business. He did all the preparing for wallpapering like a pro and he even promised he would try and have the wallpapers up during the week.
Mel tried not to think too much of what Ellie had said but it was hard and in the end she decided that even though Ellie might be right that kind of life just was not what Mel wanted. It might be wrong but I will me miserable doing what Ellie says is right. To show herself and Ellie and she supposed the world that boring, average Mel was gone and would never come back she wore the green dress to graduation the following Monday, the green dress and the black laced lady’s leather boots, the biker jacket and the green old umbrella. At first she felt a little nervous, thinking people would laugh at her but then she saw Ruby among the crowd attending and everything just felt right.
Most people went to a party the night of their graduation and so would Mel and she was really excited, especially since Ruby had agreed to help with her hair and makeup. To her parents she said she would spend her time with Ellie, and she did but only for a while, Ellie liked the dress but was still not supportive of Mel’s choice of using her time to become weird, as she put it.
When Mel arrived at the antique store Ruby was waiting, an entire table set up with different beauty products, and a chair and gilded old mirror for Mel to sit in and look at herself in. Who could ever have imagined. First Ruby told Mel that they would make her hair redder and put some strange greenish-brown gunk in it after having covered all of Mel except her head in an old sheet. Then Ruby made some facemask and covered Mel’s face.
“Your hair won’t be that red, we don’t have time for that but it will have a distinctive red tinge to it and I promise your face will just sparkle” Ruby almost danced around in the room as she spoke to Mel “ Oh you can’t imagine how fun this is for me! I always wanted to do such things with you and now I get to”
“I am really happy you wanted to help me” Mel said a bit stiffly through the facemask “I almost can’t believe it’s real”
“Oh it is Amelia mine, it is”
When her face had been washed off and her hair had been rinsed out in the bathroom sink Ruby dried it vigorously with a towel and when Mel saw the color she could barely believe her eyes, just the kind of gorgeous red color she had always wanted. And then Ruby made curls, all over her head, and put them up in a messy hairdo that Mel could not stop looking at.
“I love it Ruby, I totally love it!”
“Wait till I am done with your face” Ruby smiled broadly.
And she was right. When Ruby was done with Mel’s face she could not stop staring into the mirror. Average Mel was now totally gone. This Mel was so much better. More confident and more like the Mel inside was these days. The Mel in the mirror had shiny, red, curly hair and green eyes thanks to the dress and the expertly chosen and applied makeup she had on her face. She had porcelain skin and she looked happy. The dress was awesome too of course.
Ruby drove Mel to the graduation party with her scooter and promised to pick her up at twelve like any fairy godmother worth her salt would, and drive her home. The party itself was quite an event for Mel, her new style raising eyebrows and people giving her complements, both boys and girls, some boys even flirted with her and made her happy but confused. No one ever noticed her before. Of course not all people were kind though and when Ellie left just shaking her head instead of coming to her aid when someone was being mean Mel just felt like going home but she staid and all in all it was a good night, quite fabulous actually. Until just before midnight when she overheard Ellie say that she thought Mel only wanted attention and that she looked like a circus clown, to another girl. Then she did leave and leave fast.
