Mel came home very late that night and her parents were just as unhappy about it as Mel suspected they would be. Also she was maybe a little drunk. When they had finished with their speeches about responsibility and immaturity Mel just asked calmly if it would be alright with them if she drank copious amounts of water and went to bed as she had to go to work tomorrow and did not want to be late. They could hardly say no to that.
When Mel asked Ruby about what was actually going on with her parents she sighed and looked weary. Ruby looking weary was new to Mel and she did not want to make her feel bad but she had to know. Eventually Ruby made them the drink of drinks, hot chocolate with a hint of rum and sat on the counter.
“Well, as I told you I was once meant to be your fairy godmother, I held you at your Naming Ceremony and I promised to look after you. I was twelve, an only child and I really wanted to teach you all I knew. Silly maybe but that’s how I felt. I got to tech you some but ……”
“What? Ruby what happened?”
“I had to move with my mom and was no longer allowed to see you. My mom and your mom were best friends once but it kind of changed soon after you turned two and then we moved”
“What happened between them?”
“I really think you should talk to your mom about that because I only know the half of it and I don’t think I should guess at what your mom thought or felt, is still feeling and thinking. Ask her what happened on the first Tuesday of august in your third year soon after you second birthday. Ask her and if she refuses to answer then I will tell you what I think happened”
“Do you really think she might tell me?”
“Maybe. If you tell her you really want to know, that you will not accept to stop seeing someone you call a friend just because she says so”
And Ruby was truly a friend, a good one. Mel sat in a chair and stared out a window for some time to think and when Ruby came up to her, happier now than before and told her to get her butt to the back room to unpack some boxes that had just arrived she smiled at her and promised herself that no matter what her mom said she would not let it come between her and Ruby.
The boxes turned out to be full of gorgeous clothes in jewel colors, many fine dresses in emerald green actually. And who could possibly be sad or worried with so many fancy garments to unpack and try on.
