That weekend Mel found the most amazingly cool thing in the yard sale. An old wooden four-poster bed. Needless to say her parents were not equally exited but after a rather successful campaign that involved promising to renovate the thing all on her own they agreed to let her buy it for her birthday money, even though her birthday was over a month away. They put it up in the garage and Mel immediately went to work, discovered it was harder than it looked and took help from Google to figure out how best to get it done. She had this fantasy in her head, this picture of her room all changed and more mature. Of bold colors and drapes on the four poster bed. Right now her room was white and light pink, her mother’s choice ages ago so at dinner her second campaign to get her parents to agree with her wishes were launched. It took about a week to convince them. She had used arguments such as, wall to wall carpets are a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria and the wallpaper is coming down in the corners. In the end they said yes and her mother even promised to help her. Mel’s new unaverage life had begun.
But Ruby was nowhere to be seen. Mel had been by the antiques shop every afternoon after school the entire week but the only one working was an older lady who while kind and concerned had no idea who Ruby was. Very disconcerting but maybe Ruby being new in town meant the lady just did not know her yet. Today it was Friday and still no Ruby though a really cool green dress had caught Mel’s eye. Of course it was too expensive for her to afford on her allowance. But it cost nothing to try it on so she did. It reminded her of Ruby, even if this dress was green and not red. As she stood in front of an old mirror the lady who manned the store came over and said it looked good on her. “But I can’t afford it Mel blurted”
“Oh, but maybe you could work it off” The old lady looked around as if to see if there was something she could do immediately. “How about I put it aside and you can come in tomorrow when the owner is back and talk to her, maybe you can work something out”
“That would be great. Thank you!”
Mel went home a little happier than she had been before even though Ruby had not been there and soon she was immersed in bed renovations. She was oiling the old bed frame with brown pigmented oil and dreaming of how great it would be to sleep in. When she went inside for dinner her father and brother surprised her, they had removed the wall to wall carpet in her room and there was a nice wood floor underneath that could look real good with a little care. Sure she had to sleep in the guest room from now on until it was finished, but that was totally okay.
