Ruby was not at the store, not for days and eventually Mel decided to go and find her. It was wearing on her not knowing where Ruby was or why, if it was because of Mel she stayed away. She found Ruby’s address among papers in the stores office and after lunch one day she simply closed the place, the old lady, Beth was her name, would probably come by soon for her shift anyway, and went to see Ruby.
It took some time to get to the address listed since it was on the outskirts of town and Mel was walking, when she finally stood outside the gate though no one seemed to be home. She decided to go have a look but since the scooter was not there she feared neither was Ruby but still she knocked on the door with hope. No one answered and disappointed Mel turned to leave and nearly tripped over a large black cat. It looked indignantly at her at first but then it started to purr and wind itself through her legs very clearly showing it wanted Mel to pat it and before she knew it she was down on cat level scratching and patting and stroking. Then suddenly the cat got up and walked up the garden path away from Mel towards the door. Mel saw that as her cue to leave but the cat came back and sat in front of her and then it went back towards the door. Mel thought maybe it wanted something and followed it. By the door the cat knocked over a pot of flowers and with a very distinctive and assertive meow it sat down and started cleaning itself. Under the flower pot lay a note and a key.
Hello Amelia.
I am sorry I just left without saying anything. I will be back soon, just had to talk to someone. Make yourself at home, eat and drink what you like but don’t let Archibald talk you into giving him too much ham or cheese, it makes him sick.

Mel had no Idea how Ruby knew she would turn up but had her suspicion about who Archibald was, the cat. The cat who had shown her the note.
Inside she felt as if though she should not be there at first, it was Ruby’s privet space but before she knew it she was well at ease in one of the comfortable armchairs in the library, that was also a tower, eating cheese sandwich with hot chocolate and sharing freely with Archibald. Having forgotten it might make him sick in the face of his wonderful cattishness, the way that only a cat can be. A soft, warm panther, wild but cozying up to her making it easy to think he was tame.
