Mel was waiting for the opportune moment to talk to her mom. It turned out to be a lengthy business. Opportune moment seemed to be scarce and far between so in the end she just asked her. Blurted it out the way Ruby had said. Asked what happened that day in august when she was two. At first her mom got angry because it was obvious Mel had seen Ruby again since the night she came to the house but then as Mel said she would not stop seeing Ruby without a good reason she relented and sat down to talk.
She told Mel that Ruby’s Mom , Jewel had been her best friend. That despite the fact that Jewel was several years older they had had the best of times together, jewel being like a big sister to Mel’s mom, Helen. Helen looking up to Jewel and wanting to be much like her with her husband and her daughter and her warm, happy and cozy home. But then Jewel had let Helen down. She had come to see Helen one warm day in august, bringing Ruby with her, saying she needed to tell Helen something. What she had said had shaken and chocked Helen so bad she had screamed at Jewel, shouted at her to leave, take her daughter with her and go. But Ruby had defended her mother and Helen had slapped her for it. Jewel and Ruby had left and never been seen again. Helen had been reluctant to tell Mel what Jewel had said but in the end she told her. Jewel had told Helen that she was getting a divorce from her husband Fred and that she was in love with a new person, a woman. She had told Helen that she had had a crush on her several years earlier and that had been what got her thinking. She said she was bisexual and she wanted to thank Helen for helping her discover that about herself. Helen had been appalled by this news, having grown up with a single mother that had taught her that such things were unnatural and what had taken her father from her. Taught her to stay away from such people lest they destroy her life and now her best friend came to her and said she was one of those people, that she had had a crush on her. Helen felt tainted and threatened by Jewel and her words, worried for herself and for her family, her daughter. She wanted Jewel to leave. Then Ruby who had overheard them had spoken up and said Helen must be a very small-minded person for acting the way she did when her mother only wanted to share good news. That she was happy and in love. Helen was so beside herself and insulted she had slapped Ruby before she knew what she was doing and if Jewel had looked patient with Helen before that she looked furious now, said that she was rather certain it was Helen one should stay away from and not the other way around. Then she was gone and Helen had never heard from her again. Jewel knew of how I felt about such things and yet she choose to become that way Helen had finished. Who knew what had become of Ruby. She did not want her daughter around such people.
Mel had only sat there in silence not really knowing what to say. She understood her mother had felt and was still feeling betrayed but she just could not see things the way her mother did. She had no wish to discuss it though since even thinking about people in such terms as wrong or right because of who they loved was new to her and felt wrong. But she did not want to upset her mom more so she thanked her for telling her a vital part of her own history and went to sit in her nearly finished but unfurnished room. Rubinas book in her lap as companion.
