Day Eight | Chapter 02: Frothing Despair | Punishment
Amber couldn't say this outcome shocked her. Mitch had practically handed it to her.
And yet....
"W-What?! Mitch, you-you didn't!" Jerome cried out in disbelief.
"I did. I brought the poisoned ginger tea to Seto, I poisoned him. I watched as he choked to death on his own blood on the library floor."
"Why?! D-Don't tell me you did it to escape!"
"I thought you guys already figured out why Seto was killed."
"That doesn't rule out the possibility that our killer thought Seto was the mastermind, and that by killing him, they would end the event."
"If that happened, they wouldn't have to worry about anyone getting executed at the trial..." Jerome murmured, black eyes widened.
"But.. They didn't end the event.. And now.." Mitch didn't finish the sentence, instead adding something else to it. "They were wrong."
"You just wanted to end the event, didn't you?" Amber asked, feeling a sense of horror at this.
"Yeah. I was just so sure the clues were pointing at Seto.. I know it doesn't make me any better for killing him but.. I just wanted to save everyone.. I wanted to stop this sick event before someone else got hurt...."
"Mitch.."
"You wanna know what I did? When I gave Seto the tea and he drank it, I asked if he was the mastermind. That's when he realized it and he threw the mug... I didn't realize he was innocent until after he was dead.. He tried to crawl away. To warn you guys I guess.. then he started convulsing and foaming at the mouth.. Then he just stopped.."
Everyone looked horrified at the description Mitch gave of the events.
"I'm sorry, guys. I should've told you straight out that I killed Seto instead of just hiding it.. That would have saved us so much.."
"You were scared, Mitch... I'd probably be the same way in your situation.." Chase said in what sounded like an effort to be comforting.
"Heh.. It's kinda ironic.. I'm the Ultimate Hunger Games Champion.. You have to be good at surviving in those games.. Guess I wasn't good enough, huh?" Tears were in Mitch's eyes.
"Mitch.."
"I wasn't good enough to survive this messed up game.." He glanced over to MonoMachine who was grinning maliciously. "And now I have to suffer the consequences."
"Mitch, NO!" Jerome cried out, gripping onto his friend with his big paws. Mitch didn't even flinch.
"Sorry, Jerome! Rules are rules!" MonoMachine chirped, clapping their hands excitedly.
"Please! I-I'll- Please, anything! I'll do anything!"
"There is nothing you can do, you dense creature!" MonoMachine snapped back but Jerome ignored his insult.
"I-I'll sacrifice myself! I'll take his place!"
"Oh please, don't pull a Tyler on us!"
