"So, what exactly is this function for?" Tom asks as he holds my hand while we cross the street to the glass two story building.
"Charities, all of the funds raised tonight go to two different animal protection programs, one foster care program, two medical programs one that's searching for a cure to MS (multiple sclerosis) the other one provides funds to families who can't afford treatment for their kids, and I think that there was one for national forests. I'm not sure though." I say acting as though it was no big deal, and to me it was no big deal. This function has been an annual thing for me since I killed my father. So this has been happening for the last ten years 6 of which I had been using the same charities.
"That's a big deal. How much money are you planning to bring in from this event?" Tom says stopping me in my tracks in front of the building.
"800 million, in profits." I say looking Tom in the eyes since I still felt as though what I was doing wasn't a big deal at all. How could it be? Between the six charities it would only be a few million dollars. It was nothing compared to all of the money that they needed. Especially the research charity since they did really great work. However, the people who organized it and dedicated their life to the cause got little to none of the money raised. They were the true heros, the people who were willing to sacrifice everything for nothing, but the happiness of others. The heros were the people who went off and fought in wars to protect our homes, land, and families. Even though they haven't met a single one of us.
"That is a huge deal. People who wouldn't have money to support others, have that money. Animals who would lose their homes, or their lives will be able to keep them because you're giving those organizations money. How often do you do this?" Tom asks in disbelief as though there wasn't another person in the world with the same idea making the same amount of money. I was not oblivious and knew that someone else was doing this somewhere around the world, and was making more money than me. Being able to support organizations like these ones so much better. Instead of answering Tom's question I took his arm and led us into the building. Into the jungle of the high end society, the people who were greedy and opened their pockets for these events to save face. I loved being able to use reputation to manipulate people, it was too easy.
As soon as Tom and I walked into the room I was greeted by CEO's, investors, bankers, stockholders. Anyone who was anyone, there were even two celebrities who came in from Hollywood. I was glad that Tom stood by my side the entire time I had to go through introductions and the boring motions of polite chit chat with the women. I hated their needless conversations such as what label was in, and which so and so's are together. Honestly it's just dumb there are better things to worry about than clothing and men. The bell rung making me unconsciously aware that I had to go up to make a speech and introduction for my company. Thank everyone for attending and each and everyone for their donations. Even though everyone in the room knew that everyone was only here because it was one of the biggest charity events of the year and it would be a PR nightmare to not be in attendance.
Everyone found their name label in front of their chair, with the exception of Tom. I didn't know whether I would or would not have a date in attendance so the chair to my right was empty. He looked at it suspiciously and then brought his hazel green eyes to mine. I give a slight nod of my head hoping that no one else noticed the silent exchange between us. I was super nervous so as everyone finally settled down I wasn't exactly pleased.
"Hello everyone, and welcome to this year's charity event. In the gardens we have the carnival like games, upstairs is the dance floor, and right here is food and refreshments. My name is Lucy Luna and I'll be your wonderful hostess for the evening, if you have questions or concerns, or would like to make a sizable donation please come and find me. I am the CEO of Luna's enterprise.
"I would like to thank everyone for joining me this evening as we raise money for the charities" I list the charities that are in front of me on the podium on a piece of paper. "These charities save lives, and strive to bring the best and most hopeful results to the table. Each and everyone of your donations no matter how small or insignificant you feel it is holds an immense impact with what the charities will be able to accomplish this year. Please take this evening to help me support them, and show them exactly how much you appreciate the work that they do. Have a wonderful evening and please enjoy yourselves." I end my speech knowing that I probably tripped up and insulted someone somewhere. I couldn't think about that right now though since I had to have a smile on my face. Everyone was watching, everyone was looking for a weakness of mine.
Before I could make it to my plate of food next to Tom, I was swept off in the arms of another man to the dance floor. My wolf cringed at the thought of anyone but Tom dancing with me first, yet business was business. If this would get the money for the charities than I would be pretend to be happy with whoever I was with no matter who they were. No matter how snotty.
