Kenji
As Emiko and I continued working, every now and then, the Blacksmith's wife would bring out some kind elemental like food out for us that we would eat off of for a few minutes then get back to work. It wasn't as hard as we originally thought, but as it got later and later; I started noticing Emiko looking a bit drained. We had been working almost nonstop for about four hours. We only had one more hour to go. "Steel, how's it." We stopped when we heard a man with a strange sounding voice. "Garnet, hello. You're early." Our employer, Steel, greeted back, walking up to a tan man with straight black hair and strange reddish eyes. "My last client cancelled. So I thought I could come by early and see if I can figure out what's going on with the forge." The man said with a smile. At that, I heard a light thud and looked over at Emiko to see her laying on the ground looking like she was hiding. "Emiko, are you okay?" I ask her quietly as I squat next to her. "Y-yeah, I just hardly leave Magnolia unless Natsu and the others are with me. I'm not good with meeting new people. Plus, that man looks too familiar for my comfort." She said softly, making sure to keep her voice low enough that only she and I could hear what she said. "If it makes you feel safer, stand behind me and hold onto my jacket. I can hide you from him with my body." I told her. She nodded softly before crawling behind me, we stood slowly at the same time and I felt her grasp tightly onto my jacket. I could feel the back of my jacket tremble lightly, letting me know how nervous or even scared she really was. I moved my hand back and felt her side, letting her know silently that I was going to protect her.
"Garnet, these are the kids from Fairy Tail that came to help me until you arrived. Just give me a moment to give them their payment and we can go over and look at the forge." Steel said, unfortunately drawing the man's attention to us. He must have noticed how straight I was standing, with my hand back sort of behind my body. He slowly started walking towards us. He was slightly crouched down with both hands out in a surrender imitation and I realized he was trying not to scare Emiko than she already was. I felt her stiffen suddenly, before she really began trembling. My worry for her began taking me over and I growled at the man, slowly stepping back to keep him away from her. She gripped my jacket with both hands and her grip tightened. I couldn't tell if I was scaring her more or if it was because she knows he's walking towards us but, I stopped growling nonetheless. "Garnet, stop. Don't take another step closer to them." We heard Steel's voice suddenly. All of us stopped all movement except Emiko. She was still trembling.
I heard Garnet gulp with my enhanced hearing. "Kenji, Sapphire is coming over to get Emiko. She isn't going to harm her, she just wants to help. Don't attack; Emiko will be safe with her." I heard Steel address me. I didn't know anyone was behind us until Emiko is no longer grasping my jacket and she lets out a frightened squeak. I spun on my heels, ready to use my magic if needed. "Sapphire, don't move." Steel said. After her being frozen for a moment or two with Emiko in her arms and Emiko reaching out for me with tears going down her face, I came to my senses. I stepped to Sapphire, shielding Emiko's view of Garnet. When Sapphire noticed that I wasn't going to attack, she went inside with me quickly following her.
As soon as the door was closed behind us, I watched the tension leave Emiko's body and I released a breath of relief. Sapphire placed her on a couch and brought a chair over for me to sit in. "I'm sorry, Sapphire if I scared you. I don't know what came over me." I said quietly, watching Emiko as she quickly fell asleep. "What exactly happened, Kenji? I might be able to help." She said softly. I shook my head before putting my face in my hands. I didn't even know where to begin. I don't understand what happened. So, I began from the beginning, when Garnet showed up to the moment the door closed and Emiko relaxed a bit. It actually took me an entire hour and a half to explain everything I was feeling and everything that was going through my mind. By the time I was done, Steel came in and Garnet left and Sapphire had fixed him and me food. I even explained how I felt when we were on the train and I saw how miserable Emiko was on the train.
By the time I was done, Steel sighed. "I don't know much about the Lost Magic, but what it sounds like to me is you guys may be mates. My father was a Devil Slayer, I didn't get his powers so he didn't teach me much about the people who are the same as you but, he did teach me the basics about mates. He described how he was with mom when they first met and went on their first quest. Their guild even had to make them a permanent team because no one else can handle it when something happened to one of them." Steel explained. I wasn't taught about mates, so I was confused on what he was talking about. He sighed before standing up and going to a book shelf. "Here, this is for you both. Read it. It's a book about the different lost magics and it includes both Dragon Slayer magic and Devil Slayer magic. It might help you. It was my father's." He told me. I nodded and he also handed me a tannish package. "Here's your payment as well. I even added a little extra to help her and her Exceed. She and my wife spoke a bit and Sapphire told me." He explained. I nodded before thanking him. "You guys can stay the night or head out, it's up to you. I'll help you guys get to the train station but, it's up to you, Kenji." Steel said. I sat there thinking about what to do.
When I finished, I heard movement next to me and saw Emiko raise up and rub her eyes while letting out an adorable yawn. Wait... what? "Kenji, when are we going... home?" She asked, getting interrupted with another yawn. I smile slightly before turning back to Steel and his wife. "Looks like we'll be heading out then. Thank you guys for your help." I said to them before standing up. "It's no problem, Kenji. If you guys are ever in the area, stop by if you'll have a place to rest." Sapphire told us before we headed out. Time to go home to Magnolia.
