Chapter 39

Emiko

When we finally got back to the guild, Kenji carried the little exceed over to Wendy as I walked a little behind him. "Wendy-san, we need your help." I called out to get her attention. "Oh, Emiko-san. You and Kenji are back from your mission?" She asked me as she stood up from the table she was sitting at. "Yes, we got into a little bit of a delay and now we need your healing assistance." I said to her as we reached her.

She looked over at Kenji and gasped when she saw the little tail in his arms limp. "Right, bring him to the infirmary." Wendy said as we followed behind her. She told Kenji to lay the exceed down and let her hands hover over him. A light green hue took over the air between her hands and the sleeping exceeds body. "It seems like on the outside, he just has a few bruises and cuts along with a cracked rib. But, I am picking up on a few worrisome health issues. He's malnourished, starved and exhausted. Also, from whatever happened to him, he might have some fears and anxiety problems for a while. He will need a human like Charle, Happy and Lily. I can heal the minor stuff but the rest will take a while to fix." She explained to us.

We were both quiet for a while; Kenji was the one who found him. I was letting all of this be his decision. "Just tell us what all we'll need to do for him." He asked her. She smiled at that. "Don't worry, I'll help you guys. I'll explain everything that will be needed soon. For now, let me heal him. I'll have Mira find something for him to eat and we'll let him rest. He needs to start with that. We'll need to have someone stay here at night with him until he is healthy enough to leave. I'll let you guys decide what you'll do concerning his safety. You can switch off, do it together or pick different members that you trust completely to stay different nights so that everyone gets the chance to sleep." Wendy explained, we nodded before leaving the infirmary. Kenji looked utterly exhausted. "Go home and rest a while, Kenji. The guild will be full today, so no one will be able to harm the little one. I'll let Mira know we completed the mission and let Master know we'll have a new addition to the guild once the exceed wakes up. I'll send someone to get you when he does wake up." I told him, putting my hand on his arm.

He's silent for a few minutes before he turns to me with a small sleepy smile. "Thanks, Emiko. I'll only take a few hours." He tells me. "No, take all the time your body needs to rest." I tell him. He nods and leans in, kissing my forehead lightly before walking out the door, leaving my face the color of Erza's hair.

Kenji

I can't believe I did that. What was I thinking? I'm so stupid. I kept thinking as I walked toward my apartment, my face red. After a few minutes, I calm down and my face goes back to normal. Well, she is my mate. I don't know what I'm freaking out over. It's not like she can reject me. "I hope." I say out loud before sighing. Shaking my head, I pass by a store front and saw a little kitten in the window. It immediately made me think of Emiko for some reason. It was so tiny, I knew it was still a baby. It was purple with grey-blue eyes. I knew it wasn't an exceed as it stood on four legs instead of two.

Walking into the store, I went to the counter and asked the shopkeeper how much the kitten was. "That little thing? She's a rescue. My wife and I want to find a good home for her. If you want her, go ahead and take her. I'll let you have the things she'll need for only 1,000 jewel." The shopkeeper explained. "What's her name?" I asked him. "Our daughter calls her Iris, but you can change the name if you'd like." The man told him. "I'll take her, but I need to go get some help carrying everything I'll need because I rescued an Exceed while on a mission today, so I'll need two of everything. Can I leave her here while I go get one of my guild mates to help me?" I asked him and he nodded with a smile. Then I run out of the store, heading back to the guild, trying to think of whom to get help from.

Once I get there, I silently snuck into the guild hall, knowing Emiko would probably get onto me for not going home. I sneak silently over to where Team Natsu was sitting, unable to keep my smile off my face. "Lucy, can you pick someone you know won't try to start a fight with me and meet me outside the guild?" I asked her quietly when I got over to her. She turned around. "Sure, Kenji. I'll get someone. But, may I ask why?" She asked me, looking slightly concerned. "I want to surprise Emiko but, I need a little help as I can't carry everything myself." I explained vaguely. She smiled at that and nodded. "Sure, I'll find someone good to help." She told me before standing from her seat and turned away. I quickly but quietly dashed out of the guild. Now to wait to see who the blonde picks.

Lucy

I was surprised when Kenji came and asked me for help, but after he explained why he was asking for help, I just couldn't say no. I can tell something happened on their mission. Something is different between Kenji and Emiko but, I couldn't figure out what happened and I decided not to ask. They'll tell us when they feel ready to. I went over to another table and grabbed Levy and Gajeel followed. "Lu? What's going on?" She asked in a confused tone. "Kenji needs our help with something. Come on, he'll explain when we get outside." I explained to her, trying to keep my voice low so that the other dragon slayers in the guild wouldn't hear me.

We safely got outside and I spotted Kenji in the shadows of some trees. I silently made my way to him. "Kenji, I brought Levy. Which Gajeel always follows. Anyway, what do you need? What's this surprise?" I asked him quietly. He immediately began walking down the road, us walking along side him. "I found a rescue kitten at a shop. Not an exceed, just a regular kitten. And she's perfect for Emiko. I'm taking her to my apartment. But I need to get stuff for her and the Exceed we found on our way back from our mission. Unfortunately, I don't have enough arms to carry the kitten and everything I'll need to get. Was wondering if you guys would be willing to help me." He explained to us.

I couldn't help but think that was a sweet surprise. "Of course we'll help you, Kenji. You're a part of our guild now. We always help each other." Levy-Chan assured him. His smile widened, if that was even possible. "Thanks, guys." He said, his face turning red. When we finally stopped at the door of a pet shop, Kenji pushed open the door and we heard a little slight meow and the sound of a little jingle coming towards us. Kenji bent down as a little purple kitten jumped into his arms. "Guys, this little one is Iris. The shopkeeper is giving her to me for free and all I have to do is pay 1,000 jewel for the things I need for her." He stated as he turned toward us, petting the little purring machine that nuzzled its nose against his neck. "Aw, she's so cute." Levy said, reaching a hand out to pet the little kitten.

Grey-blue eyes opened to stare at all of us before focusing on Levy's hand in curiosity. She put her little head forward, touching it to Levy's hand and nuzzled against it, meowing softly. I smiled lightly at the little thing, she was just so tiny. "I have everything on the counter for her that you'll need. Just pick out what you need for that exceed you were talking about." We heard a man's voice say as an older man came from behind a curtain. He had black spiked hair and coal black eyes. "Thanks. By the way, I forgot to introduce myself earlier. My name is Kenji. These are my guild mates. That's Lucy, Levy and Gajeel." Kenji introduced us. "My name is Sasuke."
