Chapter 43

Kenji's POV

After Wendy used her healing magic on Emiko, her and I were in the guild hall eating as Shoken was in the infirmary resting. Emiko and I were talking about when we wanted to go on our next mission when gramps appeared on stage with Erza, Mirajane and Gildarts. "Brats, listen up! I have an announcement to make!" He shouted as everyone stopped what they were doing and looked up to where he was. "Following the Fairy Tail guild's time honored tradition, I will now announce the entrance of this year's S-Class Promotion Trials!" He announced before the guild erupted into cheers. "Shut up and let the master finish talking." Gildarts said stoically. He stayed silent for a few moments. "The trial this year will take place on Tenrojima. Our guild's sacred ground. " I heard Lucy asking someone about what the master will make the competitors do this year, though it seems like it's something different each year. "The strength you possess, your character, and your hearts are what I considered while making my selections. And I have chosen 8 participants." Gramps paused for dramatic affect.

"Natsu Dragneel." Happy jumped into the air as Natsu cheered. "You've got this in the bag, buddy!" He said laughing as he flew around Natsu. "Gray Fullbuster." I saw Gray smirking out the corner of my eye. "It's finally my time to move up in the ranks." He said arrogantly. "Kenji Revolt." My eyes widened when I heard him say my name. "Gramps picked me?" I said to myself in shock. "Elfman Strauss." "S-Class deserves a real man like me." A large man with white hair said with a cocky smirk on his face. "Best of luck, Big Brother." I heard Lisanna's cheerful voice say. Wait... what? "Cana Alberona." When I looked over to see who Lucy's attention went to, I saw a brunette who had a sad expression on her face. I didn't understand why though. I assumed this was Cana Alberona, so why did she look sad that she got picked for the promotion trials? "Freed Justine." I saw a guy with green hair with two strands of hair in the shape of lightning bolts. "So, I'll be following in Laxus' footsteps." He said calmly. "Levy McGarden." I saw the short blue haired girl have a smile on her face, happy and surprised that she was picked. "I'm so stoked about this." "Levy is totally going to win this!" Two guys said behind her as she expressed her joy. "And Mest Grider." Some members were cheering about the man being picked.

I heard a few words of disappointments from a few members, but most everyone was cheering about who were picked for the trial. "Although 8 wizards have been selected, only one will emerge victorious and become the next S-Class wizard. The trial will begin in one weeks time. So prepare yourselves!" "How come he picked Kenji put I got passed over! I thought he liked me better!" I heard Gajeel shout. I looked over my shoulder at him. "You seem to have a shady reputation in the guild for some reason. I get the feeling they don't trust you very much." I heard his exceed say to him. "That's crazy! They can trust me just fine!" Gajeel shouted. "I just... can't tell them what I'm really doing around here..." He said quietly. "Take it up with Erza." The exceed said. "Sorry, you're just not ready yet." The woman in question stated from the stage. "This whole thing sucks!" The guild seemed pretty excited about the announcement. Gramps waited until everyone quieted down a bit. "For the benefit of our new comers, let's go over the rules of the challenge, shall we?" Gramps said before turning to Mirajane. "The 8 participants will each choose a partner..." I saw Natsu suddenly grab Lucy, startling the poor girl and Cana looked even more disheartened. I proceeded to put my arm around Emiko's shoulders. "This person will also be allowed to train with them during the week leading up to the event." "A partner?" I heard Emiko and Lucy question at the same time, causing the girls to look at each other and smile. "Yeah, it's ultimately a battle between two person teams. A big part of it is about putting their friendship's to the test as well." One member explained to the girls.

Next was Erza's turn. "Observe these two rules when choosing your partner. Number one: They must be  member of Fairy Tail. Number two: Your choice cannot be an S-Class wizard." When she finished, gramps began speaking again. "We'll reveal all the particular details of the trial once we've arrived on Tenrojima. But know, you'll have to get passed Erza to claim victory." The members who weren't participating made sounds of horror. "And I'll help weed out the rest of you." Mirajane said with a sweet smile on her face. "The 8 participants I named earlier, and their partners, are asked to meet at the port of Hargeon one week from today. So get to work!" After that, we were all dismissed. Emiko and I were invited to sit with a small group of guild members. At the table were Natsu, Lucy, Lisanna, Elfman, Wendy and Juvia. Emiko sat next to Lucy and I sat beside Lisanna. When the small white haired girl noticed my presence, she turned and looked at me. "Oh, good luck to you too, Kenji-san." She said with a smile. I smiled back at her. "Thank you, Lisanna-san. Though, I am a little surprised that the master chose me." I said to her. I couldn't help but notice that Natsu was oddly quiet. I looked over at him to see him glaring at me. "Hey, what the hell are you glaring at, fire breath?" I snapped. "What did you say, ass wipe?" He shouted. My eye twitched. "Why the hell are you getting angry for, hot heat?" I shouted at him. "Fight me!" He shouted back. I summoned my blue flames to my fist. Emiko grabbed my arm. "Kenji, now isn't the time. You need to decide who your partner will be and figure out where you'll train." She said softly to me. I looked down at her for a moment before sighing softly, letting my flames disperse.

I sat back down, ignoring Natsu. "Well, I've already decided on who my partner is. I've chosen you, Emiko-chan." I told her, watching her reaction. I smiled when her eyes widened in surprise. "Me? But why? You need someone who can fight well along side you." She stated. "Besides the fact that you're my mate, you are a strong mage with your dragon slayer abilities. You are the perfect choice for my partner." I explained to her. She sat there in shock for a few minutes before smiling at me. "As for where we'll train... is there any areas near Hargeon that don't get a lot of people?" I asked those around the table. Lucy stood up suddenly. "I have a great idea!" She shouted suddenly. She ran over to master and asked him a question before running over to her mother. When she was done, she went on stage and grabbed the mic. "Excuse me, I have something I wish to say to the participants and their partners." She said. Those of us who were participating in the trials and those we chose to be our partners moved to the front of the crowd.

"Master has agreed to this being allowed and my mother has agreed to it as well. I would like to extend an invitation to all participants and their partners to train in the Dragon Realm. There are many different climates and dragons that may be able to help you with your training. For those who are Dragon Slayers are allowed to train with their dragon as well. I can make a portal to take you there and when it is time to meet at Hargeon, I can open a portal that will take us straight there." She explained. The other participants cheered, while I was left confused. What did she mean by "Dragon Realm"? "I would recommend all of you go home first and pack what you may need. Time flows differently, so I will be sure to let you know when dinner will be served and when the end of the week will be." A woman who looked like Lucy said from behind everyone. After that, everyone went to their homes, packed what we would all need, came back to the guild and Lucy opened a portal in the guild hall. Before we all entered, the participants took the time to choose their partners. In the end, Natsu chose Lucy herself as his partner, Levy chose Gajeel as her partner, much to her team's disappointment, Gray chose Juvia as his partner, Elfman chose a green haired girl with glasses named Evergreen as his partner, Mest chose little Wendy, even though Charle tried to talk her out of agreeing, Freed chose a man Lucy called Bixlow as his partner, and Cana was standing there, one hand holding her arm, looking at her feet. "Cana-chan, who do you wish to be your partner?" Lucy asked. "Actually... I was going to choose you, Lucy-chan." Cana said hesitantly.

Lucy looked surprised before her expression softened. Suddenly, there was a golden light coming from Lucy's hip and her eyes widened once more. When the light faded, kneeling in front of Cana was a man with golden brown hair and ears. He had on a pair of sunglasses and a tux. "Cana-chan, I know it isn't the same as being partnered with Lucy-sama, but allow me to be your partner for the S-Class trial. It won't burden Lucy-sama for my gate to remain open because I opened my own gate with my own power and it will be my own power that will keep me here." The man said. "Loke, are you sure about this?" Lucy asked worriedly. "Yes, hime. I am sure about this. Though I am not sure how long I can hold my gate open, this is something I wish to do." The man, Loke, stated. I saw Cana look at Lucy. "If you are okay with this, Cana-chan, I will allow him to be your partner for this." Lucy said. Smiling softly, Cana hugged the man. "Thank you, Loke." She said against the man's chest. After that, we all stepped through the portal.
