The past will be written in Italics. I will be alternating the present and past as each chapter from now on.
My relationship with Gale had escalated from a date to a girlfriend in 2 weeks and then a fiancée in 6 month to a wife in in 8 months. It was a whirlwind romance, that I was sucked into, I was too dazed to even realize what I got my self into.
During this time I realized that Helen, Gale's mom was not very happy with the way things were going. She met me just once before Gale proposed and had made sure I knew that I was not a good choice for her son.
Gale's dad however didn't show any dislike, but had very impersonally welcomed me into the family. Gale's proposal was a huge surprise for me. I just finished college and was still living with my parents as I looked for a job. I wanted to get a job, move out of my parents home and save up a little before I got married. But that didn't mean I couldn't get engaged. And so I happily accepted his proposal.
But I hadn't expected this reaction from Gale when I told him I got a job.
"Cris why are you so keen on getting a job? I earn enough for the both of us." Gale said exasperatedly.
"Gale, this isn't about how much you earn, I went to college for a reason. I want to work have my own financial independence." I said
"Cris you will be busy setting up our home, and as my wife, you will be hosting and entertaining a lot of my clients and partners. I need that to grow in the firm. They won't hand me things on a silver platter just because I am a senior partners son." He argued.
"So you are marrying me to play host? " I asked angrily
"No. I am marrying you because I love you. But as someone you love, wouldn't you do these for a better life for us. For our future family?
"Of course I will Gale. I will support you anyway you want. But where is this coming from . It didn't bother you when I started my job hunt. "
He sighed "Well mom just showed me how important it is for you to support my growth. And I agree with her. We are a team, we need to do this together for a better future."
"If we are a team, shouldn't you be supporting me too in my decision."
"Cris" He sighed again.
"I am not saying I wont support you Gale. I am sure I can handle both. "
"Fine if I am agreeing to this, then we are getting married in the next couple months."
I still can't understand how, Gale convinced me for a wedding just two months after his proposal.
I didn't want a very big wedding. I just wanted a small intimate gathering with family and close friends. Which Gale agreed too in the beginning, but as we started planning, he started adding more people to attend, and wanted a more granduer venue. My parents said they couldn't afford such an expensive affair and so Gale's Dad Edward offered to bear the cost.
Once Edward had offered to pay the bill, Gales mom got involved in the planning making it the event of the year. And Gale was happy letting her do so.
"If we are paying for it, we should at least be able to invite who we want, and where we want it." Helen said when I was opposing to a few of her grand ideas.
With work pressure and the wedding planning, I was getting stressed.
"Why does it matter if it's a big or a small wedding. All you want is to marry Gale. So what's the problem." My mom said.
