His whole clan had been wiped out years ago leaving only two survivors.
Him and his little brother Sasuke.
He remembered it like it had happened yesterday.
When Itachi returned home everything was silent. Red specs of blood decorated the compound and remains of his family were sprawled all over the ground.
His mother, his father, his uncles and his aunts, all of them dead. Thankfully Sasuke wasn't among the many piles of bodies. Hope blossomed in his chest as he realized that his brother might be alive.
His precious brother might be alive!
He looked in every house and every corner but couldn't find him.
"Sasuke! Are you there?"
He didn't hear an answer. It was hard looking through bodies of his former friends and family but he had one and only one goal in mind.....
To find Sasuke. He had to find him.
A whimper caught his attention. Then another, and another. He followed the sounds to the fence.
Itachi finally found his brother shivering in a hole. He almost didn't recognize him from all the injuries decorating his body.
Sasuke was black and blue all over, several red lines now decorated his body and his nails were non-existent.
Itachi turned white as snow as the severity of the situation crashed upon him.
His precious little brother had dug and dug until his fingers bled in order to escape the one responsible for all the death around him.
The broken voice of his brother whispered again and again.
"N-no. P-p-please st-top"
"I c-can't take it any-anymore"
Like a bomb had been set off, Itachi's heart shattered. He had never heard his brother talk in such a broken way.
Sasuke had always been a shy child but he had never whispered in such a low tune. Itachi was certain that if he hadn't had his shinobi training, his brother's heartbreaking words wouldn't have reached his ears.
Reaching his hand to his brother, Itachi's already shattered heart broke even more.
Sasuke's eyes didn't seem to recognize Itachi anymore.
"It's okay. Big brother is here"
Why hadn't he been there when his brother needed him the most? If he had been there he could have saved his brother from whatever happened to him.
The next years passed by in a blur. Itachi didn't really do anything anymore except take care of his brother.
After the massacre, Sasuke forgot almost everything. He only remembered the agonising pain and heartless eyes looking down on him.
The scars had healed as much as they could.
It was hard for Sasuke but even harder for Itachi. His little brother was nothing but a broken soul. His little baby brother didn't remember him anymore. They had both lost their childhoods, far too soon.
He quit everything, even his Anbu career.
Itachi had once been a warm, kind, forgiving person, but no more. The new him had walls surrounding him higher than heaven and barriers thicker than thousand miles.
He had no friends, only Sasuke.
Sasuke was the only thing that mattered, but Itachi had failed him.
Even if he tried to believe, Itachi knew his little brother would never heal completely. He would always be in constant pain, reliving the nightmare of the bastard who had broken him but he couldn't do anything about it. He would just have to try to take the pain away and in order to do that, he had to put his ambition on hold.
Itachi made a vow on the day of the massacre. He would kill the man responsible for his brother's pain, no matter what or who stood in his way.
Itachi watched from the shadows as the pink haired girl escaped her restraints with the help of snakes of all sizes. She was a curious one.
How had she gotten into the compound?
The fence was protected by powerful chakra seals but somehow she had managed to sneak in.
It all made sense when he saw her locket.
Before Itachi's father died in the massacre, he told him about the mysterious girl.
Ten years ago, an infant was sent to an orphanage by Kizashi Haruno. It had been proved that he wasn't her father. Her looks were never talked about for her own protection, but stories were told of a girl that appeared out of nowhere.
The Hokage was surprised when he felt an enormous power radiating from an orphanage from the Aizen neighborhood.
He found out that the power was coming from a girl.
A powerful energy surrounded her. She was so powerful that the village leaders asked the Uzumaki clan to seal her power away.
The girl was sent back to the orphanage. Nothing out of the ordinary happened for some time, but two years later an ancient looking locket appeared on her neck out of nowhere.
Only those of high power knew her true identity.
During his Anbu days, Itachi was often sent to spy on the girl. The Hokage was extremely suspicious of her and ordered Itachi to follow her for a long time.
Don't get him wrong, Itachi was loyal to the village, but something just seemed off with the Hokage. The leader had been acting strange and unlike his normal self ever since the strange girl appeared.
Due to that reason Itachi didn't report the girl's strange abilities to anyone. It even seemed she was too powerful for the Uzumaki seal.
With time the seal weakened and weakened but it didn't completely wear off. It had to be taken off by a ninja in order for her true power to fully manifest.
He felt bad for leaving her alone, but it would seem suspicious if he suddenly started talking to the girl.
Itachi continued to spy on her until the massacre. After that, he hadn't seen her anywhere so he was surprised when she appeared in the Uchiha compound.
While she was unconscious he took the seal off. It seemed like the right thing to do.
He let her go but followed her from a distance.
She walked to the other side of the compound and entered one of the houses there. A few seconds later she came back out with a small backpack and made her way to the gate.
Before he could stop himself he offered her to stay.
"You can stay here if you want"
She whirled around to face him.
He wanted her to stay. He knew she was a good person after his spying and Sasuke could use a friend.
She surprised him by agreeing.
They walked back to Itachi's house in a comfortable silence having, too much on their minds to start a conversation.
