Avelyn kept on reading the letter.
“Oh! It says that he’s bringing a friend along.”
Demina didn’t pause from her work.
“That’s nice,” she said, pounding the mats. Dust flew and she coughed into her sleeve, her eyes watering.
“Yes, he’s also a prince. He lives in the kingdom of Nissania. His name is Castiel Devis.”
Demina snorted.
“What kind of a name is Castiel?” she asked. She looked up at Avelyn when she didn’t get an answer and instantly grew wary at the sparkle in Avelyn’s eyes.
“Ava, don’t even think about it.”
Avelyn looked at her innocently, placing her palms up.
“Think about what?” she asked, her voice rising in pitch. It always did that when she was nervous, excited, upset, or trying to hid something.
“You know what. I plan on joining a convent.”
“Demi, no! Someday, you’ll find someone!”
Demina laughed at Avelyn’s horrified expression.
“You’re too nice, Avelyn.”
The mountains between the kingdoms of Barnstadt and Impreza were treacherous. The roads were rocky and touch to walk on. Not to mention the fact that there were bandits and thieves along every checkpoint. All in all, the road to Impreza was a dangerous one and Jaxon was tired traveling it. He couldn’t wait for the day he asked princess Avelyn to marry him so he could be done with this back and forth traveling. Oh well. It was worth it. The last thing he wanted Avelyn to have to travel these roads.
“Hurry up, Castiel!” Jaxon called to his friend. His steps grew lighter and quicker as did his smile at the thought of his beautiful Avelyn.
“I don’t see why couldn’t have taken horses, Jaxon,” Castiel called back.
Jaxon shrugged, unwilling to admit that he hadn’t that about that. He had been so excited to see Avelyn that he had just packed the necessary provisions and set out. Castiel sighed, catching up with him.
“You need the exercise, Castiel.”
Cas smirked, rubbing his flat stomach.
“You mean the thought flew out of your mind when you started thinking about your fiancée.”
A teasing glint entered Castiel’s eye as Jaxon blushed.
“Ahh, Jax. I think you got a little sunburned.”
“Shut up, Cas. Once you meet her you’ll understand. Besides, we aren’t engaged yet.”
Jaxon was waiting for the right time to ask Avelyn. He wanted the moment to be as special as she was. Castiel clapped him on the shoulder, laughing.
“I’ll take your word for it,” he replied.
“I can’t wait until you find an angel your own, Castiel.”
Castiel burst out laughing. He laughed until he was clutching his stomach.
“No, Jaxon. Don’t do that to me. I am going to remain a bachelor for the rest of my life.”
Jaxon was startled.
“A bachelor? Why?!”
“For the simple reason that women are a pain.”
“Oh.”
Jaxon’s face fell for a moment before he quickly smiled again. It would take a special type of woman to capture Castiel’s heart...and Jaxon knew just the right one. Castiel had better be careful.
