Lyris' POV
If you asked me a month ago, how I would imagine my life in the next month. My answer would not have been this.
As I stood there, the voice offering encouraging words of blow them up and use your powers and stop standing like an idiot in the middle of the battle, I realised something.
Everything in my life, was leading up to this one moment. I didn't even realise it but I was part of something much bigger than myself.
I stood here while everyone else was fighting the battle. My battle.
Things were so bad, that Drave considered joining sides with the enemy.
This wasn't his battle to fight, it's mine.
Maddie stood of to the side of me, sword in hand, shouting insults at one of the Vatlans.
Matthew, his back to Maddie, slashing at another Vatlan.
Drave tackling the leader and Druim at his side.
This wasn't their battle yet, here they were. Fighting the battle for me. I couldn't allow that.
Four Vatlans charged at me.
Using my powers, I took them and continued on to the next set of Vatlans until Maddie, Matthew, Drave, Druim and I were standing side by side in front of the Vatlan leader while the rest of the army lay motionless all around us.
"Seems I underestimated you. All of you," the leader said, looking at me.
Then someone came out of the shadows behind the leader.
It was the Queen of Radon.
"My son," she said.
Drave stiffened, as if he didn't believe it until now.
"Maddie there. Are you ready?"
"Ready to do what?" Matthew asked.
"Oh, your dear sister didn't tell you. Ready to take her place by my side."
My head whipped to the left, where Maddie was standing, a huge smirk on her face. Matthew was on standing on the other side of her, his face contorted into a shocked expression when Maddie took a few steps forward and took her place next to the Queen and the Vatlan leader.
"Shocked now, are we?" the Queen taunted.
More Vatlans assembled behind them.
Thoughts raced through my mind. How could Maddie do this to us?
To her brother, to Drave, who she knew for her whole life.
"Maddie," I heard Matthew say in a strained whisper.
"I knew you would never join me brother, which is I why you leave me no choice except to do this," Maddie said.
Maddie drew her sword, which I didn't even realise she sheathed and walked up to Matthew, a sickening grin on her face.
"I am sorry brother," she said before using all her force and pushing the sword through Matthew's gut.
"How could you?" he whispered as he fell to his knees and Maddie withdrew the sword.
The last I saw of her, was a smug look on her face before tears hazed my vision and streamed down my face.
Matthew and I never really talked or were close but he was always there when I needed him to be. I mean I never needed him but if I asked I was sure he would come to my aid.
Drave seemed to get over his shock, blinded by a new rage. He went straight for his mother but she and Maddie teleported out before he could even make a mark on them.
So, he redirected his hit to the leader of the Vatlan army.
He made quick work of him, slashing and hacking, making the Vatlan leader stumble and not giving him a chance to regain his balance.
I stood there frozen, tears still streaming down my face.
Matthew was counting on me to stop them, he believed in me, I'm assuming he did, anyways.
I couldn't let him down. I couldn't let Drave or Druim down either.
Maddie would pay and so would the so-called Queen of Radon.
They betrayed everyone's trust and left them so broken in the face of battle, they wouldn't be able to fight back.
Well they were wrong, I would fight till the end.
For Matthew. Even though I barely knew him.
I leaped into battle at Drave's side, channelling my anger and betrayal to the leader of the Vatlan army.
Drave's POV
How could Maddie do this to her brother.
Kill him in cold blood as if it was no one's business.
She would pay for that, I would make sure of it.
I leaped into battle, I was heading towards my excuse of a mother when she and Maddie teleported out.
So, I changed course to the Vatlan leader.
Hacking and slashing his rough skin as tough as leather. A new-found adrenaline rushed through my veins. I had to do this for Matthew, for Lyris, for all of them.
I glanced over at Druim who by Matthew's side. Out of all of us Matthew was closest to Druim.
Soon Lyris got over her shock and joined me in fighting the leader.
She sent wave after wave of energy hitting the Vatlan square in the chest while I didn't give him a chance to stand up after he stumbled.
Tears slid down her cheeks and a sob escaped her lips.
A ball of light formed in her hands and she threw it at the Vatlan's chest. His chest glowed orange and spread to the rest of his body and he crumbled into dust.
She fell to the ground, whether from exhaustion or grief, I didn't know.
I knelt down beside her, "Matthew," she whispered, "Help me go to him, please."
She stood on shaky legs, tears streaming down her face still. Tears formed in my eyes at the sight of Matthew on the ground, blood pooling out of his gut.
"Lyris," he whispered.
At this point, I chose to excuse myself so they could say whatever they had to say to each other. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Druim do the same and he came to join me.
"You never told me," he said.
I gave him a questioning look.
"About the two of them."
