Chapter 67

Niall...
"Niall, I'm fine! Relax." Annabelle laughed. "My ribs are broken, not my legs."
Today was the day they were finally letting her leave the hospital. After being in the hospital for a long and tiresome month and a half, they finally deemed her fit to leave. She was able to keep a reasonable amount of food down, gained some of her energy back, and had enough to move and walk on her own without collapsing.
"Well, your ankles were injured before." I argued, still trying to help her.
"Yeah, before. Not anymore." She stood up off the bed, fixing her dress as she did so. "See? I'm okay, Niall. I can stand."
"Yeah, but...but..." I stammered, "what if you fall?" I couldn't help but be so worried about her after all the suffering I saw her endure in physical therapy, just trying to get her strength back.
"Then you will be right there to catch me." She said in a soft voice, gently brushing her fingertips on my cheek. "Would it make you feel better if I held on to your arm?" She asked, knowing the small gesture would do everything to reassure me.
"Yes." I said matter of factly. "Yes it would."
She giggled at my childlike behavior, but did as she said, wrapping her arms around my upper left arm and leaning against me as we walked.
"Bye, Annabelle, sweetie!" We turned to Annabelle's nurse, giving her a smile and a wave. The hospital staff here was incredible in helping heal her.
"Where's everyone?" Annabelle asked as I helped her into the car, almost as if she just noticed they weren't here.
"They're all back at the house." I answered, keeping the details at a minimum. Did she need to know they were decorating the house for a welcome back party? No, she didn't.
"I can't wait to be home." She happily sighed. "How long has it been since I was taken? I don't even know how long I was....there."
"Almost three months. You were with them for a month." I said shortly, tightening my fists on the steering wheel, not wanting to go back to that time.
"Oh."
The rest of the drive was silent. Not an awkward silence though. It was a happy and peaceful silence, filled with the slight hum of the radio. Annabelle was too busy gleefully looking out the window as we drove through LA.
"I missed this." She whispered so quietly, I almost didn't hear it.
"Missed what?"
"Being in the car with you, watching all the wonderful scenery pass by." She smiled at me.
It was in that moment that all my worries went away. My fears of her falling into depression, of her never being the same, they all vanished.
She was going to be just fine.
"Me too." I whispered back, taking her hand and kissing it before the light turned green.
I didn't release her hand for the whole ride. We pulled up to the house too soon. I was almost tempted to take a few laps around the neighborhood just so I could have her all to myself for a little longer.
Don't be selfish, Niall. Everyone else wants to see her too.
I quickly rushed to her side to help her out, which earned me an eye roll accompanied by an adorable giggle. "Your castle awaits, Princess."
